Guest guest
Doc, Does your Kenmore distiller require a filter? What do you use to have the water distill into? I see some used Kenmore units for sale and wondered if I should go with one of them. One is Kenmore 34480 Countertop Water Distiller it comes with a container it distills into. The other is Kenmore Countertop Water Distiller by Ecowater Systems and the woman who is selling says it doesn’t need a filter (so I wondered if that was the case) and that you could distill it into whatever you wanted. So I was wondering if I got the second if a regular glass gallon jar would be fine, or if it needs to be something special. Sears no longer sells the brand new Kenmore water distiller. What would be the integrity of water distilled into a polycarbonate plastic container? And finally, does anyone know anything about this company and their distillers? They have one that comes with a polycarbonate plastic jug to distill into, and they have another model that distills into glass. http://www.webeatprices.com/product_info.php?cPath=1 & products_id=5 & osCsid=96742etkemblhf5bgicqfiiuv7 http://www.webeatprices.com/product_info.php?cPath=1 & products_id=1 & osCsid=k59132iog43dl494t7k7letnf2 Thank you for your help! Guest guest
Hi Victoria, It has a small bag post filter that is filled with activated charcoal orrrrrrrrrr, you can just leave the filter out. I think it just tends to add a little flavor, and since I'm adding the Baking Soda to it, don't really feel you need this small little bag the size of a tea bag. We usually distill our water into either a glass container, or a Type 1 plastic container that doesn't leach any plastic. I think a used one is a good way to go. Ours has lasted for ages. You can use a bowl if you have to, but I think glass is best of course ;o))) I'm not crazy about polycarbonate, because if you leave it in the sun, it will leach. Same goes if it's left in a hot place for too long. You don't have this problem with Type 1 plastic containers. If you're going to store for any length of time, glass or type 1 is the only way to go. Type 2 is better than polycarbonate, but over time will still leach some. Both Type 2 and 7 are OK for short periods of time if not left in heat and / or the sun. The distillers you posted below look almost identical to my Kenmore with the small bag of charcoal positioned in the little exit tube = probably made by the same manufacturer but different names. I'd go with the cheaper one as it looks like a #1 Plastic container, and you can always use your own glass container, if you want to go the ultimate way.
