Anybody have any advice for a healthy way to to prevent further damage done to

my bladder from a resistant strain of e-coli? This is the second time I have

gotten this in about a two year period of time, the first time almost killed me,

spent a week in the hospital as the Dr.s didn't realize it was Cipro resistant

til 2 rounds of cipro and three ER visits and three months of illness? They lost

a urine sample...don't even get me started...ha. I am currently going through a

divorce after 25 years of marriage has no doubt lowered my immunity to illness,

and have lost about 45 lbs. I was taking 2000mg of vitamin C a day plus a

multivitamin, once daily, as I had read that it would prevent urinary tract

infections??? Thanks. Waiting for urologist appt and am on Elmiron 3x daily.

Feel sick...thanks to all in advance. Lin

I would take the maximum does of Cranberry capsules as they increase the

bladder wall's resistance too infection, I'm also taking something at the

moment called " Urinary Tract Support " (google might tell you the

ingredients, I would drink 2 -3 L decent (not town water) water a day,

massage the pressure points for the bladder (rub along the top of the

symphysis pubis from hip to hip - concentrating on the sore bits - this lies

directly in front of the bladder itself) - ensure the bowel is kept healthy

and if I was desperate I'd take Homeopathic Cantharis 200.

D-mannose has helped me get over UTI's many times. A cranberry extract power (no sugar added) is sold at vitamin shoppe and I mix the 2 together and drink several times a day. D-mannose and cranberry are great critcal care treatments. For long-term use try xylitol sweetened lemonade with added vitamin C. This s an inexpensive drink with hundreds of benefits in addition to preventing urinary tract, prostate, and vaginal infections.--- On Tue, 12/22/09, Hugh Ramsdell <hughman73 wrote:

Xylitol is a natural sugar that is actually made in the human body. It is rare that it causes a negative reaction and I recommend it to all my clients with urinary or prostate problems. However, it still is a sugar-alcohol and only limited amounts can be metabolized by the body. Usually two to four teaspoons spread out throughout the day is all anyone needs.

Jonathan Wright, who writes widely and has a large client base, espouses xylitol use for multiple purposes including nasal spray and toothbrushing.

As with all things we all have different "limits" and "One man's food is another man's poison." Your having a problem with xylitol should not prevent you from recommending to others as long as you tell them to proceed carefully and to monitor their doses.

I would suggest getting kefir grains (traditional), making kefir as it has plenty of pre and probiotics which act as bacterocins according to some studies I've read recently. I know it has helped my IBS and GERD of many years standing. It builds up our whole system with healthy microflora. Dr. Oz was recently expounding on the tremendous volumn of probiotics etc. in a healthy gut and how that affects one whole system. One of the recent studies I read stated that it was based on the microflora of vaginal fluid of "healthy women" where 4 strains of their lactobacilla were tested against antibiotic resistant and problematic pathogens, specifically:

"Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 39592, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and E. coli ATCC 25922".

I didn't get the name of the publication but an email contact for the study was given as: E-mail: std . I thought their test strains sounded like typical kefir lactobacilli and I checked them and they were.

Merry Christmas, Joyce Simmerman
