The metal is what give the paint its specific color. The metal is merely suspended in a solvent so that it can be manipulated with a brush or other tool. Also in the solvent mixture is a fixative or binding agent that allows the matallic base to adhere to the material on which the paint is applied. Thanks Tony, LOL - that's what I meant - we actually used to grind up the oxides and mix them with linseed oil
