Guest guest
I have a 10yo patient that 'hates' the taste of her custom herbal formula (powder) and can not swallow pills (so encapsulation is out of the question). I am curious if any one has any 'tricks' to help make herbs more tolerable to a 10 year old. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
There are a couple of tricks I've learned. One is to have the powder mixed with honey and frozen into small chewable pieces. Another is to use the powder as normal, let it cool down and then just have her hold her nose while she slurps it down. This works better if less liquid is used than normal so that she can get the tea down faster. Guest guest
grape juice seems to mask the flavors better than other juices. My " trick " is to slip the capsules one at a time in my applesauce. Then i can swallow. I choke easy. Another option is bribery not always good either but a thought. Guest guest
What is she taking the herbs for and is she taking them as a tea? Perhaps dropping the powder back on her tongue and quickly swallowing them in one quick gulp with fluid will be more tolerable. I find that it really minimizes the taste. Hope it will help...God Bless............Betty Chinese Medicine , " graham " <dghaynes131 wrote: > > > I have a 10yo patient that 'hates' the taste of her custom herbal > formula (powder) and can not swallow pills (so encapsulation is out of > the question). > > I am curious if any one has any 'tricks' to help make herbs more > tolerable to a 10 year old. > > Thanks in advance. > > Graham Haynes, MAOM L.Ac. > www.AcupunctureInMaine.com >
Guest guest
If it's a bitter herbal formula, it's almost impossible to get it down their throats if they hate the taste/texture. Even if you add rock sugar or honey to make it sweet, the will ask you why they are taking the medicine and already have a phobia around it. If you stick powder back in the throat, they will spit it out and become even more defiant. Bribing works. Try $1, if not you'll have to raise the ante. When I was a kid, I hated drinking herbs. My grandmother offered my $5 and then my whole idea around it changed. After a couple of times, the phobia goes away and you don't have to bribe anymore. If that doesn't work, go with homeopathics.... K. Guest guest
I find tinctures to be easier with children. Gentle Warriors line through www.kanherb.com (or any of their formulas. see if you can match one to your combo. they may even be able to come up with one for you. I saw something about that but haven't checked into that service for myself yet). sami
