Guest guest
Hi, I'd appreciate some help: 20 yr old female with ADD taking Adderall. Main symptoms are feeling spaced, unable to concentrate, unable to make the grade in spite of high IQ. The tongue is bright red and partially peeled, where it's not peeled it has a thick white coating. The client is NOT feeling hot or cold unusually. No other health concerns. What herbs should I give here? I wonder if this is caused by the Adderall and won't change if she takes those drugs. Anyone has experience with it? Thanks for the help. Guest guest
My opinion is that the bright red peeled tongue means heat damage to kidney and liver at the ying/constructive and blood aspects. Thick white coating MAY indicate phlegm heat misting the heart. I think in this case the drug definitely is influencing the pattern, at the very least you can use a formula to clear heart fire and nourish heart/ kidney yin while resolving phlegm (look at gun tan wan and/or tian wang bu xin dan). See with the physician if it is possible to get her off adderall. Points should treat the shao yin channel (such as K6, H5) and jue yin channel (Liv 2, Per. 7) What is the pulse like? Guest guest
Hi Angela, There's a few things to take into consideration. Is she drinking any alcoholic beverages? Those counteract the effects of Adderall. How much stress is she dealing with? It is common for those with ADD (or for most of us as well) to deal with stress by going to a completely other space in their heads. Coping mechanism. If that is the case the treatments would be geared toward reducing stress and balancing her shen with her physical body. The usual Gui Pi Tang might work well. What is her medical history? Has she been on the Adderall for long? If not she should be able to tell if there is a remarkable change in how she is feeling before and after she started taking Adderall. If she has been on it for awhile, she might consider changing her meds. One of the side effects of Adderall is lightheadedness and can be serious. She really should consult with her physician if she noticed this effect from the meds. Adderall can also cause insomnia which presents another set of problems for those with ADD. It is likely that change will be difficult if this is the case. Another thing to consider is her diet. It is not often that I come across early 20 year olds with good eating habits. I usually have to educate them on the principles of good nutrition (with a bit of Eastern nutrition). And unfortunately, many young females are not inclined to eat enough due to concerns about maintaining their weight/ figure. And that brings to mind another question - what is her constitution? Is she more on the skinny side with a wiry pulse? Or is she on the heavier side with slippery or soggy pulse? Both will require very different treatment, tonifying vs. sedating etc... I have worked with many children, mostly teens who are on some sort of neurological altering substance. It is unfortunate that it seems to be so prevalant. Much of my job has been to weed out the meds that are useless and or causing harm. Fortunately, most people by the time they get to my office are ready for an alternative. Seems like my job would be easier if I was their first line of defense rather than last. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi Angela, I ask a question in these situations: " Are the drugs helping you? " If the answer is yes, then I ask " How? " With that info down I have an idea of what the drugs are doign to help, and how they are imbalanced. From there I can do acupuncture or prescribe a formula to help the drug do what it's doing better and balance it out at the same time. Usually when I do this the person is able to start gaining good benefit from the drug and also begins to improve. Then we wean them off the drug and ta-da.
