Guest guest
Hi, I am a new member, just learning about /acupuncture, although I am an RN and work as a natural health educator. I have a daughter who has been suffering with dry eye for about 10 months now, (ever since she got contact lenses, which she hasn't worn for 6 months). She has been diagnosed as having Meibomian Gland Dysfunction(MGD) which means the oil glands on her eyelids are plugged. She has also been having increasingly painful and somewhat heavy periods the last several months. I have been doing some liver support (milk thistle) and have her using a FIR sauna dome now in addition to warm packs on her eyes. I searched here and couldn't find anything here about dry eye. Does anyone have any experience with this? What would be the Eastern Medicine view of this and approach? Thanks, Kathy
Guest guest
The eyes are nourished by the Liver, and Liver is evident in the eyes. What is the first sign of jaundice? yellowing of the sclera. Additionally, Liver channel encircles the genitals, and menstrual irregularities are often treated thru the Liver. Best to take your daughter to a knowlegable and experienced practitioner of chinese medicine for a complete examination. Treatments, herbs, diet modification, among others, can help balance Liver function. Menstrual difficulties and dry eyes are likely symptoms of the imbalance, so when balance is restored, symptoms will subside. You did not mention in your post where you are located, else our advice might have included referals. Guest guest
Thank you Mark, We saw a practitioner yesterday who said she is yin deficient, did a acupuncture treatment on her and gave her some herbs to take. It was a good experience and we will be going back again today and a couple of more times before we leave on a 10 day vacation. Guest guest
Mark and All, My daughter has had 2 treatments now. She has been taking the herbs and we have been eating more cooling foods as well. Yesterday morning we had a duck egg, steamed greens and sauteed mushrooms for breakfast. She didn't use eye drops (as she normally would) when she first got up in the morning, but by afternoon, she was ready for some. I will keep you updated if you are interested.
