Below are a couple of articles showing the benefits of cooking with

(Virgin) Red Palm Oil.

Tropical oils have gotten a bad rap over the years, but most of that has

been mis-information. It is far more unhealthy to use shortening and

hydrogenated fats in foods, which are SO common and widely used these

days!

There is also environmental concerns over the use of plantation palm,

but our palm oil is NOT from plantation palms. Rather it is made from

native palms using traditional, fair trade and organic methods.

It is absolutely wonderful to use in soap making. It makes a long

lasting, hard bar, with a stable lather that is highly conditioning.

This oil imparts a wonderful rich color to your soapy creations. It is

also a very nice addition in reddish tinted lip balm recipes!

INTRODUCTION

Palm oil is produced from the fruit of the Elaeis guineensis tree. It

is a vegetable oil, not an animal or dairy product, and therefore does

not contain cholesterol. Palm oil sometimes is confused with palm

kernel oil, but in fact is different, being derived from the mesocarp of

the palm fruit rather than the centre kernel.

Palm oil contains much less saturated fat than palm kernel oil or

coconut oil. Palm oil has been used in food preparation for over 5,000

years. Today it is consumed worldwide as a cooking oil, in margarines

and shortening, and as an ingredient in fat blends and a vast array of

food products. Food manufacturers choose palm oil because it has a

distinctive quality, requires little or no hydrogenation, and lengthens

the shelf life of products. These advantages are difficult to duplicate

at the same cost with polyunsaturated oils, which often have higher

market prices and require additional processing for the same

characteristics.

PALM OIL HAS ANTI-CANCER EFFECTS

Vitamin E of Palm Oil

Palm oil is the richest known source of tocotrienols (Slover, 1971). No

other common edible oil (except rice bran oil) contains this form of

Vitamin E in significant amount.

Tocotrienols of palm oil exhibit anti-cancer properties (Komiyama et

al., 1989; Guthrie et al., 1993; Goh et al., 1994 Nesaretnam et al.,

1992). Tocotrienols have greater physiological efficiency in inhibiting

the growth of human and mouse tumour cells than tocopherols (Kato et

al., 1985; Komiyama et al., 1989; Sundram et al., 1989).

Prof. K.K. Carroll (1997) and Guthrie (1997a; 1997b) from University of

Western Ontario, Canada showed that tocotrienols inhibit proliferation &

growth of both estrogen receptor-negative MDA-MB-435 and –positive MCF-7

human breast cells in culture. Gamma tocotrienol is 3 times more potent

in stopping the growth of human breast cancer cultured-cells than

Tamoxifen (a drug widely used in the treatment of breast cancer). When

used together with Tamoxifen, the combination was found to be 45 times

as potent. In comparison, tocopherols have been found to have no effect

on the growth of breast cancer cells. Recently a study conducted at

University of Readings (Nasarethnam et al., 1998) also showed similar

results.

Prof. K.K. Carroll of the Centre for Human Nutrition at the University

of Western Ontario and Prof. David Kritchevsky of the Wistar Institute

recently concluded that evidence from animal and in vitro studies

indicate that the tocotrienols of palm oil are effective anti-cancer

agents, and that there is adequate justification for clinical trials in

human cancer patients.

Carotenoids of Palm Oil

Crude palm oil is one of the richest natural plant sources of

carotenoids with concentration of 500-700 ppm. It has 15 times more

retinol-equivalent than carrots and 300 times more than tomatoes. No

other vegetable oil contains carotenoids in significant quantities.

Analysis shows that alpha and beta carotenes constitute approximately

90% of the total carotenoid content. Carotenoids impart a rich

orange-red colour to the raw oil. More than 80% of the carotenoids are

still retained in the specially-refined product called the “red palm

oil”.

The beneficial effects of carotenes on cancer and other chronic diseases

have been demonstrated in population studies and human clinical trials

(Krinsky, 1993; Bendich, 1990; Garewal, 1993; Ziegler et al., 1993;

Greenberg, 1993; Zhang et al., 1992; Wolf, 1993; Greenberg et al., 1990;

Blot et al., 1993). If future studies further confirm the anti-cancer

effects of carotenoids, palm oil will play a vital role in the

prevention of cancer.

Red palm oil as a means of combating Vitamin A deficiency

More than 250 million under-fives in the world are at risk from vitamin

A deficiency. Such deficiency, currently the primary cause of avoidable

blindness, provides the conditions for diseases to take hold, leading to

high death rates among these young children. Several strategic options

exist for combating these deficiencies: medicinal supplements, vitamin A

enrichment of foods at industrial or community scale, or diet

diversification founded on the use of locally available resources. The

latter approach was adopted, in a pilot project for promoting unrefined

red palm oil in Burkina Faso. IRD scientists from the research unit

“nutrition, diet, societies”, working jointly with Canadian and Burkina

researchers (1), ran a trial from 1999 to 2001. They tested the

effectiveness of red palm oil on the vitamin A status of mothers and of

under-fives in the East-Central part of the country, an area where it is

not normally used. This oil, known for its richness in the vitamin-A

precursor beta-carotene and its high efficiency, is, however, commonly

produced and used in another area of Burkina Faso, in the South-West of

the country (2). It was transported then sold as a food supplement at

the trial sites selected for the project, in order to assess its impact

against deficiencies in real conditions of use, in other words

conditions of free voluntary acquisition by women. These women were

informed beforehand of the issues involved and of the benefits of red

palm oil by employing various awareness communication methods (talks,

discussions, theatre, and so on).

The impact of this consumption on the vitamin A status of the women and

children involved was assessed by measuring blood-serum retinol levels

at the beginning and at the end of the investigation.

After two years, the results showed a clear increase in vitamin A intake

by mothers and children who had consumed red palm oil directly or

indirectly (through breastfeeding). Increases of intake to nutritional

safety levels of between 41 and 120% were recorded in mothers and of 36

to 97% in children. In parallel, the proportion of mothers and children

who had presented a strongly deficient serum retinol rate, lower than

the recommended threshold (0.70 µmol/l), at the beginning of the study

had fallen, going from 62 to 30% for women, from 84.5 to 67% for

children. As the oil was made available only for the pilot project,

these results can be attributed to it. In real trade conditions red palm

oil proved an effective dietary supplement for combating vitamin A

deficiency.

Furthermore, in two years, nearly half the women in the trial project

changed their behaviour by intentionally including this oil, which was a

new foodstuff, in their diet. This emphasizes the feasibility and

possible long-term application of using it as a supplement, based on the

marketing of the product, prior issue of information and the setting of

prices appropriate for the local market. Consequently, palm oil can, as

has other health-promoting food produce (particularly vitamin-A-rich

fruit and vegetables), and combined with other strategies, be

incorporated in national vitamin A programmes in Burkina Faso, where the

project is now being extended, and in other zones of the Sahel. Further

studies are under way on the use of red palm oil in meals served in

school canteens, and on other benefits of bringing palm oil on to the

market beyond the production zones covered by the project. Among these

positive results is job generation, especially for women.

(1) The partners involved in the research conducted in Burkina Faso from

1999 to 2001 in the context of the pilot project were the University of

Montreal, Canada (Hélène Delisle of the department of nutrition,

helene.delisle) and the IRSS (Institut de recherche en

sciences de la santé) of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso (Noël-Marie Zagré,

nzagre) and the IRD.

(2) Red palm oil is extracted from the oil palm Elaeis guineensis.

Red Palm Oil: The Answer to Healthy Living in America Today

Red palm oil is the second most consumed vegetable oil across the globe

and has been used for cooking in Asia and Africa for generations.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 29, 2004) BUFFALO, NY, - Safari Group Inc. has

emerged as the leading wholesaler and retailer of Red Palm Oil; a

dietary additive with amazing health benefits that until now was unknown

to most people in North America.

Red palm oil is the second most consumed vegetable oil across the globe

and has been used for cooking in Asia and Africa for generations. This

cooking oil is rich in vitamin A, beta-carotenes, vitamin E, retinol,

and antioxidants: tocotrienol and tocopherol.

Booker Gompah, President of Safari Group said “We can barely keep this

product in stock, everyone seems to be saying they read about or were

told about the extraordinary health benefits of this product.” Research

has shown that cooking with red palm oil will lower cholesterol and

blood pressure; and also protect against heart disease, stroke, breast

cancer and other cancers. In terms of protection from heart disease and

arteriosclerosis, it is a natural and potent alternative to aspirin

which is prone to cause “leaky gut syndrome” due to continual usage. Red

palm oil will also strengthen the immune system and is an excellent

blood thinner for heart attack and stroke victims. Red palm oil aids in

strengthening weak vision and weight loss. Additionally, red palm oil is

highly recommended for the diet of tropical bird like parrots.

According to a Woman’s World magazine March 9, 2004 article titled “The

Miracle Oil That Can Make You Thin”, preliminary studies at Michigan’s

Wayne State University show using red palm oil can reduce your body fat

by 27%, plus help boost your ability to use sugar controlled insulin;

two keys to keeping weight under control and delaying or even preventing

the onset of diabetes. In fact, UCLA doctors say making this single

switch could cut your diabetes risk by 58%.”

New data shows that people who substitute just 5% of the fat in their

diets with red palm oil lower their total cholesterol by 9% and artery

clogging LDL cholesterol by 11% - sufficient to slash their risk of

heart disease a full 20%.

One tablespoon each day of red palm oil contains 10,000 IU of immunity

boosting vitamin A - enough to slash a woman’s risk of colds and flu by

67%. According to Harvard research, people who enjoy vitamin A-rich

diets also enjoy a 70% lower risk of all types of cancer.

“Red palm oil’s antioxidants slow the cellular aging that often leads to

cancerous changes” explains Los Angeles physiologist Robert Kowalski,

M.S., author of “The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure.”

Mr. Gompah states that the main consumers of red palm oil are: older

adults with a variety of health issues; health conscious individuals;

people trying to lose weight; and bird owners.

Chris,

I have never used Red Palm Oil in cooking, but love, love, love it in soap and

butters, and lotions. Can you say beta-carotine?!?! My goodness-in it's natural

state, I doubt if there is a better base oil than this?

How long will you have this available?
