Guest guest
Hi folks, I'm working on massage perfection This involves several pieces. I'm curious to know if anyone on the list has a knowledge of what oils are best for what Ayurvedic body types. The best info I've found so far says: Vata - sesame or castor Pitta - coconut or sunflower Kapha - mustard, olive, sunflower, or almond I wonder if there are better, or at least other, indications. I compared these to the list of comedogenic substances at http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/article6.htm That would leave castor oil for Vata and sunflower oil for Pitta and Kapha. I'd like to have two different oils for Pitta and Kapha, and I wonder about castor oil. The final piece is locating sources of unrefined organic versions of the three oils that make the cut. So my main two questions are simply: - anyone have more complete knowledge of Ayurvedic indications for massaging the different body types? - anyone have experience with castor oil? Is it nasty? It sounds nasty. -Josh
Guest guest
Joshua Alexander [josh] Hi folks, * Hi Josh I'm working on massage perfection This involves several pieces. * It sure does *lol* I'm curious to know if anyone on the list has a knowledge of what oils are best for what Ayurvedic body types. The best info I've found so far says: Vata - sesame or castor Pitta - coconut or sunflower Kapha - mustard, olive, sunflower, or almond * Let me sleep on this and answer you in the morn when I am not ready to plotz .. I am still here (not for long but the brain is already in zombie mode ;-p I wonder if there are better, or at least other, indications. I compared these to the list of comedogenic substances at http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/article6.htm * That is a good article BTW! Not everyone will get zitz from " non comedogenic " oils, but it is a good place to get a good general idea for the masses ... That would leave castor oil for Vata and sunflower oil for Pitta and Kapha. I'd like to have two different oils for Pitta and Kapha, and I wonder about castor oil. * What do you wonder about castor oil? The final piece is locating sources of unrefined organic versions of the three oils that make the cut. * Unrefined is good, and I understand why you'd want as much unrefined as possible, BUT all oils aren't necessarily nice unrefined (just a warning) .. ever experienced unrefined grapeseed oil? You'd like refined much better I can assure you So my main two questions are simply: - anyone have more complete knowledge of Ayurvedic indications for massaging the different body types? * I don't .. I'm not a massage therapist, but I'll ask my LMT buddies - anyone have experience with castor oil? Is it nasty? It sounds nasty. *I have a lot of experience with castor oil, I use it in making liquid soap all the time. It is a VERY thick oil, but not nasty unless you're drinking it ;-p I wouldn't use it for THAT classic purpose at all *lol* -Josh *Nite - for REAL now! *Smile* Chris (list mom) NEW - Lovely Perfume Bottles & Aromatherapy Pendants NEW - Red Salt Glow Scrub & Coffee Scrubs - Wrapped For Giving! <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/> http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
Hi Josh My only experience of Ayurveda is hearing from other therapists specialising in that area and they always use sesame for massage and hot oil pouring treatments (on chakras). I don't think castor is nasty - I haven't used it but it's a plant seed too. I used to think it was petrochemical derived! It is used to manufacture some plastics. Anyway, it's extracted from the seeds of the plant also known as the sesame of India according to 'Carrier Oils for Aromatherapy & Massage' by Len Price. It says it is used externally in Ayurveda for lumbago & rheumatism. As Ayurveda is traditional Indian medicine I would have thought only oils indigenous to India would be used ... Best wishes. Guest guest
Thanks Christine I'm looking forward to your reply, and any other replies that may come. As far as castor, I was mainly wondering as to its suitability for massage. Sounds like it might have to be mixed with another oil. Perhaps there's something nice and neutral that would work. I vaguely knew that some oils aren't fun unrefined... canola oil for instance, I hear we would never eat otherwise. (Not that we should be eating it.) So I guess that's the other criterion: must be suitable for massage in a natural, unrefined state. I may call an Ayurvedic College and ask them some questions about what they use. If anyone else on the list is interested in this, let me know if I should post the outcome of the project ;-) -Josh
