Guest guest
Hi all, I've been asked off line by quite a few folk, on what I stuff my woobeys with, why and what do I think of Flax seed as a stuffing, so for the benifit of those who are interested, and because I've got about three minutes until I can escape from these horrible children and run away for the evening, I'll give you a quickie note Woobeys, Microwavable pillows, bag, Warm and Cuddlies, Therapeutic Hot Pillows, herbal pillows, call them what you will... here's a few things I've learned along the way and will pass on to those of you who are interested. First Flax Seed. Personally I don't like the stuff. I used to stuff some of my eye Woobeys with them UNTIL I noticed that some of them were starting to smell rancid. Never buy Refridgerated Flax seed for your Woobeys. I mean Never. They are very high in oil. And this oil DOES go rancid. As for dried flax seed, it doesn't happen as often, but they can still go off and so I don't like to use it. That's not to say they don't make good woobeys, but they won't stay warm as long as some fillings and those that go off really stink. Rice. Rice is fairly good as a filler. It's light weight and will retain the heat for a reasonable length of time. The down side to rice is that it will dry out and crack a lot quicker than other fillings. It also won't stay warm as long. Corn, Corn cob stuffing and Cherry pits. I just don't like them from a comfort point of view. For those who do, more power to you. Personally I find them bulky and too uncomfortable to rest my head, neck, stomach and back on. Herbal pillows. These are usually a combination of Flax Seed and herbs. You've already heard my opinion on flax seed. My objections to the herbs is Three-fold. One, is definately personal opinion. I think they stink! LOL! I don't like Lavender, which is almost always in there. After doing a lot of " consumer " research, and believe me, I've done a LOT, I've found this opinion shared by a LOT of people, men in particular. Also. Herbs, will break down a lot quicker than other fillings such as rice, corn and wheat. The heat (combined with heating with a glass of water in the microwave) will help to keep them smelling " nice " for a long time, but they do break down much faster that Woobeys with a " harder " filling. " AND (did I mention about starting a sentence with " and " ?) People and thier allergies. We all know about the connection of Ragweed and Chamomile (okay, not all of us, some of us are learning). But for the general punter out there, does he or she know? One sniff and they generally find out. Too many allergies out there to mess with. I will add Lavender to mine if requested (which reminds me, Chris, I gotta visit your shop), but only if requested. So what do I use in mine. Buckwheat Hulls and Whole wheat. Together. Buckwheat hulls on their own, heat up very nicely and quickly, but they don't hold the heat nearly as long as they should. Wheat, just wheat on it's own is very nice, but very heavy. Wheat has that (like corn and rice) little cell package of water inside. If you heat them with a glass of water occassionaly, they " refresh " themselves, other wise it'sjust dry heat. Back to the subject. BuckWheat hulls are a heat conductor, Whole Wheat is a Heat " holder " . If you add the two together, the hulls start zapping the heat around your Woobey and the the Whole wheat helping to hold the heat in. I use these two because after several/many years of making these puppies, I have found that this combination holds the heat and stays warm longest. And (there's that and again) one last tip... As soon as you take your Woobey out of the microwave, especially the long slim ones... Fold them in half. Use the out side until it's too cool for you that revers the fold. the inside will be lovely and hot and the inside will warm up again. Your Woobey will stay warm up to twice as long if you use them like this. Cheers! Guest guest
> BuckWheat hulls are a heat conductor, Whole Wheat is a > Heat " holder " . Kathleen, Sounds great. May I ask where you find the whole wheat and buck wheat hulls?? I've made stuffed stocking things for years, using rice. I've never heated them....but I keep at least two in the freezer to use on bruises and strains and such. I replace them about every 6 months, cuz they pick up the freezer smells, and I can't stand it. YUCK! :oP Then again, maybe the rice is starting to go bad too??? I don't know...I just throw the entire thing away, and make new ones. I'd like to make a couple of small 'woobeys' for myself to use when I get those darn sinus headaches. They sounds heavenly! If you can't tell me where to buy the stuffing, I understand. Guest guest
Hi Candy, I'm not Kathleen, but I'd try a health food store. I know my local one sells that stuff in bulk and you can buy as much or as little as you want and the price is very reasonable. :-) HTH! Kelly - " C.
