Guest guest
Hey Josh, > Thanks for that Butch... I've been researching alternatives. Welcome fer'shur .. and I missed this post till I saw the reply Chris sent to you. knocks me off line a couple of times a day so I have to go back through the archive often to see what was sent to the list. > I wonder if Red Shiso would work? I honestly don't know what that is .. but I do know that when ANY company comes out with a SAFE and EFFECTIVE Natural Preservative .. I wanna get in on the ground floor of their stock sales because they will soon make Bill Gates look like a pauper. > I have to take issue with the cavalier attitude here, though: I am capable and experienced at making cavalier remarks but the below is not one of them. This reply was is reference to the statement that: " Synthetic preservatives are effective but have harmful chemicals. " >>Maybe .. but so does drinking water .. and the air we breath .. and >>most of the food we eat .. And maybe it is not even totally true .. what is " harmful " or not is a matter of controversy amongst many folks far more knowledgeable than me. Matter of fact .. a few weeks ago someone posted something about not wanting to use chemicals in their life .. I started to reply to that but let it go as I sorta thought that they had not said what they really meant to say .. that can happen when we get one shot at laying out our position. If not for chemicals .. Aromatherapy would no work. To say that all chemicals are harmful is to say that nature is harmful. To say that all synthetic chemicals are harmful is also incorrect. To say that we consume a lot of potentially harmful chemicals on a day to day basis would be a correct statement. But its the volume and the frequency that are critical factors here .. like dioxin (the bad guy in Agent Orange) .. a byproduct of waste incineration and and ingredient found in some pesticides .. its a normal contaminant found in many foods but at a very low level. A single high dose can trigger many serious illnesses .. like sever disfigurement and paralysis of the face .. called chloracne .. and acute pancreatitis. The Ukrainian presidential candidate, Viktor Yushchenko, was purposely poisoned with dioxin by someone in October .. Yushchenko's blood and tissue registered concentrations of dioxin that were 1,000 times above normal levels. Considering that he wants to move ex-Soviet Ukraine closer to the West and his (Vladimir Putin supported) opponent, Viktor Yanukovych, want to move closer to the Kremlin .. one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to determine what the motive was. Point is .. his face has been severely deformed .. but doctors say he will heal in 2-3 years. And this is from a dose that is 1,000 or so times higher than you or me have right now. > Sure, our water and air are both polluted, and the former is usually > chemically processed in most areas. This is NOT a good thing! It > certainly doesn't make using even more chemicals ok (Tu Quoque > fallacy). Of course not .. a spoonful of wine in a barrel of sewage or a spoonful of sewage in a barrel of wine gives us the same thing .. sewage. But an unfortunate fact is that regardless of the desires of a new and upcoming religion that wants to return to nature .. we can only do so much in the real world. We can BS ourselves if it gives us warm fuzzies .. but then we are disregarding the reality of our existence. > City water... get rid of it. I can't urge people enough to put > filters on their faucets AND their shower heads. It's always got > something in it, even if it's just a rust inhibitor. Maybe you want > to drink rust inhibitor... none for me, thanks. Filters are good for sure .. but its not realistic to expect all the folks in New York City to purchase a filter. True it is also that I am not as concerned about all the folks in New York City as I am for those that are important to me .. not a lack of concern, just its a matter of degree of concern. >>> However, we use such a low dosage that these harmful chemicals >>> should not present a problem for most people. > > Three words: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Like Chris said .. though MCS far more common today than it was before " modernization " .. yea .. I dislike that word too .. but I'm not sure what to plug in there .. its still not an epidemic. We have far more serious problems than MCS and many of them are not going to go away in our lifetime. No way will we outlaw use of fossil fuels in the lifetime of our grandchildren even. My buddy here, an American Ph.D. geologist, who is well known in the business, says the volume of oil we now have identified (not counting what is yet to be discovered) will take care of the world for the next 80-100 years. He also says that the total pollution caused in 30 years of use of fossil fuels is minute when compared to ONE natural disaster .. like a volcano erupting. There is nothing we can do to stop volcanos from erupting .. and there is nothing we can do now to stop the use of fossil fuels. >>And it's a small price to pay for what could happen if a product >>is not preserved. > > Maybe small, local, and quicker is better... The above was not my comment .. but the small price the writer referred to was in regard to not doing harm .. especially knowingly.. and I must agree with that writer. There are also legal issues and those who don't cover their butts are sorta dumb, I think. Covering one's butt means taking that degree of care which a reasonably prudent person would exercise under the same or similar circumstances. Its the best we can do with what we have to use. And .. that leaves a choice of NOT adding a synthetic preservative to this or that cosmetic product .. or taking the chance of causing a different form of harm to a user .. and possibly to ourselves. > }{ugs, > Josh I too wish life was as I want it to be rather than how it really is. But .. we must be alert to get in on the ground floor of stock issues if and when someone comes up with a LEGITIMATE, SAFE, EFFECTIVE, NATURAL preservative .. which ain't happened yet! Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
