treatment of: Acne, Pigmentation, Age Spots, Wrinkles, Rosacea, Nails. How it

works: Alpha hydroxy acids are a group of acids derived from fruits, sugar cane,

and mild that help the skin in many ways. The two main types of AHAs are

glycolic acid and lactic acid. AHAs cause detachment of skin cells, allowing

normalization of skin growth and smoother, less scaly skin. In addition,

desquamation of follicles allows cleansing of pores and helps to prevent blocked

follicles. While most short term use causes changes to the epidermis, long term

use can have profound effects on the dermis including increased collagen,

elastin, and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis (all important parts of healthy,

youthful appearing skin). This in turn leads to increased hydration and skin

thickness.

 

Effectiveness: AHAs have been studied extensively and have shown to improve many

skin conditions including photo-aging, acne, rosacea, and brittle nails. In

addition, the use of AHAs can help the penetration of other skin care products,

increasing their effects. In general, higher percentages of a given AHA will

produce a greater effect but may be slightly more irritating. It is always smart

to start low, and then gradually move up in strength. In addition to the

>Salycilic Acid, A Mild Yet Effective Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA). Useful in the

treatment of: Acne, Pigmentation, Dandruff, & Wrinlkes. How it works: Beta

hydroxy acids (including salicylic acid) work by exfoliating the skin. The true

mechanism of action is not know, but it is thought to occur by decreasing the

adhesion of skin cells possibly by breaking up the “cement” that holds the cells

together. Beta hydroxy acids are lipophilic (attracted to lipids/fats) and

because of this, their action may be limited to the superficial epidermis

(especially when compared to AHAs, which may penetrate deeper in the epidermis

and even the dermis). While treatment with beta hydroxy acids may not be as

" aggressive " , this may allow for less irritation when compared to the Alpha

variety. In addition, beta hydroxy acids have been shown to possess

anti-inflammatory properties.

 

Effectiveness: Beta hydroxy acids have been used over 2000 years and are

successful for treating various skin conditions. Recent studies of newer

formulations of salicylic acid (mostly 2% formulations) have shown rapid

improvement and overall reduction of acne lesions while being gentle on the skin

and well tolerated. Salicylic acid is a well accepted, successful therapy for
