Guest guest
Hi Michel, This is an ornery post .. but its from the heart. ;-) >>Wonder why I'm not surprised reading the below? > > Dear Butch, > > I'm sorry, I need to give more background here, you know that emails > can't express all the details that you can give when you are in front > of one another. True it is. Nor do they allow us to show our true feelings when we write on lists such as this because most readers want to believe that all is well in the world .. even though that's just wishful thinking. > It's the second time you seem " ...not surprised... " ... do you know me > so well? Maybe .. maybe not. I think I might know you better than most folks on this list .. and I might understand you as well as can ever be expected considering you are a Liberal European and I am a Conservative from a traditional background in the Southeast USA .. and about as well as a professional soldier can understand a professional civilian. > Before the list members start thinking that I regard Americans as a > " curiosity " , just some details: > I'm definitely not a French, I'm a Dutch speaking Belgian, living in > France. Good you told them .. I knew this but good it is you told the others. > Since you are not living in your homeland neither, you are probably > aware of the different ways one country looks at another. True it is .. citizens of all countries are victims of the political machines operating in their country. I find that many Europeans like to criticize Americans for what they see as " nationalistic " leanings .. but in fact, its damn near impossible to be a nationalist in the USA .. we do, however, have a mentality that can only be understood by living in the USA for a long time .. and with the right attitude .. that mentality is known as " Americanism " .. difficult to explain but easy to understand when you feel it. Immigrants usually pick up on this pretty easily. Here in Turkey I have watched attitudes change to the extreme over the years .. but Turks are no different than most Europeans .. they follow the bouncing ball in their attitudes toward Americans .. and they try (but fail miserably) to differentiate between America and Americans. What they don't understand is that the world does not revolve around the Republic of Turkey .. this wrong attitude is not unique to Turkey .. its a norm throughout Europe. Those who have training and experience in international political military relations understand that each country and each leader has an obligation to take care of the home front FIRST and then they can look to helping others. Countries/leaders don't sleep together all the time .. sometimes there will be a falling out due to a conflict of interests .. and its all about national interests .. not about who is right or wrong within the context of those interests. > Sometimes it's amusing, sometimes not. Its amusing when its friendly rivalry .. like we find between the Yanks and the Limeys .. but not when its a deep seated dislike .. or a feeling of superiority based on false national pride. For most of my adult life I considered myself as an international person .. proud of my country and our Armed Forces and the uniform I wore .. but also I was tolerant and understanding of the differences between myself and those I worked with .. in TWENTY-NINE countries. Many years ago I used to drink and joke with Soviet acquaintances about their system and ours .. and their politicians and ours. As military men we found commonality that would be difficult for most civilians to understand .. we both looked at our civilian leaders with contempt! I know that some cultures demand more of their citizens than do others. I think Turkey and the European Union are such cultures .. the system is always right. Its unusual if anything creative occurs in such systems. Folks float along with a feeling of false security due to the cradle to grave .. womb to tomb .. care that they actually believe is " free " .. these are intelligent people who should know better. There is no way a government can provide FREE services to its citizens because governments are not a salaried entity .. they do not earn money for their labors. Those who make it to the top in such systems are very good at disguising their feelings but at the same time they accumulate enough inner rage to make King Kong look like a pansy. Acceptable means of relief from their frustrations include alcohol, wild driving habits and criticism of other societies .. this is acceptable behavior for members of societies that cultivate psychological repression without the citizens understanding its happening .. where a formal and gentle facade of good manners is the dam holding back repressed rage and frustration. These folks often have difficulty understanding the average rambunctious, free willed, cocky and rebellious American citizen. In Norway folks will not cross the street when the pedestrian light is red even if they can see for ten blocks that no car is coming .. and on a street that probably only sees ten cars a day. To act otherwise would be considered as low class .. so they follow the bouncing ball. They rarely criticize their government .. the entity that ensures they have a salary whether they work or not .. even though half of that salary is taken back as income tax. The entity that taxes cigarettes and alcohol so heavily that the average citizen can't afford it .. its not a matter of right or wrong or personal choice because Big Brother always knows best. But Norway has less than 5 million people .. such a system will not work when they have 10 million. And such a system is not going to work in the European Union/EEC! For one to be happy living outside their own country of birth they must not only understand the norms of that society .. but also be able to identify with the culture. If one develops an antipathy toward that culture .. its time to move on because to stay is dangerous .. in more ways than one. In the last 2-3 years I have found myself becoming less tolerant of things I deal with on a daily basis here and with those who have no understanding of what the average American really stands for .. so I am planning to return to a life that I feel more comfortable with in the rural United States. I must do this because I've done all I can to be an honorable guest and I now find it impossible to be true to myself and be a good ambassador for my country at the same time. Though it has nothing to do with the subject at hand .. I'll comment on Martin's post concerning educating the public about the realities of AT and EO. I am tired of trying! Sometimes I feel like a medic with a box of Band Aids trying to give first aid to a sucking chest wound. I have stayed in this business as long as I have because there were good folks who wanted to learn the truth and learn safe use of EO .. and they have done well in learning this. But its like trying to stop a ship from sinking by bailing water with a tea cup .. its frustrating and since I have no desire to subordinate my own personal interests and future to an impossible task I look forward to getting out of this industry and letting others take the duty .. and when I'm gone I'll not give it a lot of thought cause I'll be too busy fishing. ;-) > French people generally have the vision of their Belgian neighbors > as being a bit stupid... French (and Greek) people generally have a vision of all their neighbors being a bit stupid .. and beneath them in many other ways. I've worked closely with military folks from those countries and the ones who are not mesmerized by the party line will be the first to admit this. Chris grew up in a neighborhood with many Greek Americans .. I have mentioned to her before that she would be shocked to see the contrast between the attitudes of the Greeks in Athens and the Greeks in New York City .. I am very serious~! > Belgians generally see French people as being very chauvinistic... As do I .. and lately, do many Americans. I also see them as being not very appreciative of the sacrifices others have made on their behalf. Jacques Chirac had plans to make France the Daddy Rabbit of the EU .. part of those plans included taking a contrary stand against the USA .. but the plans backfired. An internal French study, reported in the Strategic Global Intelligence Report on Europe .. back in May or June 2004, stated that France was its own worst enemy. It blasted France for consistent failure in not taking its role in the EU seriously .. and indicated that French attitudes were compromising the nation's political and economic goals. The report even indicted the nation's culture .. indicating that French arrogance and lack of work ethic had weakened their ability to influence the EU and had allowed the UK, Germany and Spain to emerge in more dominant positions, resulting in decisions that were not favorable to France. It indicated that French commissioners were absent from EU meetings more than 20% of the time .. only the Italians missed more meetings. The report stated that the majority of the EU commissioners described their French counterparts as arrogant, haughty and uncooperative. It stated that conducting business in France was more difficult than in other EU nations .. that French government officials were more meddlesome and less helpful to foreign businessmen and that French workers had poor attitudes and limited work ethics. It went on to say that the political climate was confrontational and more committed to argument than to finding solutions. Finally, it concluded that France had squandered its potential power and recovering its status would require a concentrated effort to control cultural tendencies. France pretends to smooch their EU brethren. If the above is how an internal French report sees France .. and how the other EU nations see France .. how the hell can the USA .. who is crapped on by France on a daily basis .. see them in a better light? There should be no question in the minds of the man on the street in Paris why only the most Liberal of blooming idiots in the USA could think we should kiss French butt in order to get along with them! It might appeal to some on this list to take a Politically Correct stand and kiss French butt .. but this ol' kuntry boy is not going to do that. I will never pretend to like people who do not like me .. or nations who do not like my nation. If they want to play in our ball park then they must stop peeing on the grass! > I could go on, about Germans or Dutch people,I was amazed to hear from > Norwegians how they regarded their own neighbors, the Swedish or Danish > people... I have many good German friends .. families and individuals .. and all in all I think they still have an attitude of superiority. Truth is, there is some justification for that if we consider the rest of Europe. As for the Norwegians .. one of the best two friends I have in the world is a Norwegian professor .. we are literally blood brothers, having made the cuts after a night of Acquavit. ;-) And I have a half sister who is Swedish .. Suzanne .. lives in Stockholm. The attitudes between the Scandinavians is one as I described above .. a friendly rivalry. There is no end to the jokes they can tell regarding this rivalry. > This stereotypes are reflected in popular jokes. I answer posts from top down .. just saw this line .. and you are 100% right .. but those jokes are told as humor .. not as disrespect. When a Brit or a German or a French person tells a joke about the other country its normally humorous and it reflects a deep seated dislike. They try to be as politically correct as possible and claim that they are all brothers of the European Socialist Union .. but down deep there is a very strong dislike and a lot of mistrust .. not all unjustified. The European Union is trying to force a marriage where there is far too much diversity .. and to do this they must do away with individuality, same system we use to build coherence in military units. I believe (and I hope) I will live long enough to see the EU fall flat on its ass! I am extremely anti-EU .. with justification. It took the Soviet Union three plus generations to learn that government cannot force or forge a healthy economy .. rare it is to find anyone who truly understands how economies really work .. they're smart enough on Wall Street to understand this .. they don't try to understand why it works they just operate within the parameters of the system and they understand that it DOES work .. and it can only be manipulated to a small degree and then for only short periods of time. It will take the EU a while to understand the same facts of life. Meantime, there will be a lot of inequity in the system and a lot of dissatisfaction among the " dependent " member nations. > I observed that most Europeans (in their jokes) had a stereotype of the > USA citizens as being a cowboy, or as the uncle Sam, with a lot of money > in his pocket, trying to buy everything or impressing with the biggest > or largest item or incredible things. They are not totally wrong to think this way. But what they are missing is that those " Americans " they are stereotyping are citizens of their own country .. that's why its hard to be a Nationalist in America. As Churchill so wisely observed .. the greatness of any country can be determined in large part by how many want in versus how many want out. > I tried in my email to show the reactions of my French friends towards > the " show " that Garry Young gave: most of my friends were used to know > small distillation units, small scale plantations of herbs... > and there you had Garry Young, showing one slide after another, the one > more impressing than the other, how he started to distill, followed by > images of huge new distillation units, fields of herb plantations > without an end... Understand .. and glad I am that the French are not fooled by that con artist .. but also, whether or not you intended to let it show .. you have assimilated well to the French society .. if it were not so you would not be comfortable there. ;-) As I stated above, I will never try to disguise my disgust for what the EU is/has done to the independent countries of Europe. > Then he showed up with images of people with cancer he had healed with > essential oils... all incredible and almost unbelievable for those present. True .. same thing happened here in Istanbul a few years back. > That's the reason they could only shake their heads afterwards. But Gary Young is NOT just another American curiosity .. no more than the Socialist extremists in many of the European countries represent the average European person on the street. > That same evening or maybe a day later (it's more than five years ago) > we were talking a long moment with a man from the region of Seattle I > believe, and another member of the idma list, I had shared a lot on > email with her, it was a great joy to meet one another. > We were comparing samples of peppermint oil and talking about > distillation units and the quality of oils, as he explained us that > " In the USA, a truck could enter into the distillation unit... " My > French friends and me were amazed: impossible! We were used to stills > of maximum 3000 liters, the average being around 1000 liters. > He pointed with his finger to the roadside and said that the kind of > truck he was pointing at could easily enter... > > Our reaction was unbelief and laughter, " ,,, you Americans always want > to have it bigger... " we were shouting. But he was probably right. We have distillation facilities here in Turkey where trucks enter .. when one is getting only one kilo of Rose Otto from 4 metric tons of blossoms there is a need for the truck to be able to back up as close as possible to the distillation units. And the smallest stills used for hydrodistillation are 4 metric ton stills. > You should read the phrase " another American curiosity " in that context. OK .. but also understand that I see many (most?) of the ridiculous and totally undemocratic activities of the European Union/EEC/European Parliament as being a very big curiosity .. and I find it amazing that those who keep warning folks in the USA to be wary of the possibility of restrictions on our personal use of natural products can't understand WHY it can't happen in the USA and WHY it DID happen in the EU. More on that later! The opinions I will express then have the full concurrence of ALL the European friends I am in daily contact with. Basically, the EU is a curiosity .. a nightmare .. and the " opinions " being put out on a daily basis by the narrow minded " expert " committees are slowly taking away the rights of Europeans to decide for themselves .. you are slowly being controlled by a misinformed Big Brother who is going to continue to legislate the mundane day-to-day activities of your lives. There is no way there will ever be a total understanding between the USA and the EU .. we are too rebellious to allow government to control us .. and we still look on with awe .. and little respect .. when our European cousins allow a bunch of misfits to dictate their daily activities. I also believe there will never be a total understanding between the various members of the EU .. too much diversity .. its just a matter of time before the rebellions begin. > Michel Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

So, can't we get the soldiers of the world to unite and declare World Peace? I am NOT kidding. It happened in the trenches at the first Christmas of WWI. As the child of a Jewish father born in the Netherlands in 1943, I am all too aware of the sacrifice made by honest soldiers. I just keep thinking there's gotta be a better way, and as a planet we'd better find it fast, before our cleverness outstrips our wisdom even more.
