Hi Folks,

This week (February 21 - February 27) our herb of the week will be

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis ).

I will post various info about goldenseal all week, and I hope that

anyone who has any personal experience with this wonderful plant will

not hesitate to post about it :-D

I sure remember my mom making us gargle with warm water and golden seal

if we had a sore throat.... made us not want to admit to a sore throat

for sure!!! Gosh, wish there was a way to make it taste

better................uhhhhhhhh

The very best formula for any infection in the mouth or

toothache/infection is a small bit of goldenseal and powdered myrrh,

freshly brewed up as a tea to rinse the mouth with.

I've tried the EO, tried red root, nothing works like the little bit of

dried goldenseal/myrrh mouthrinse.

I am fortunate that I grow my own goldenseal, otherwise I would be very

careful not to use much, substitute oregan graperoot instead.

The wild goldenseal is dying out, but it's easy to grow, if one observes

a few things.

Many, many years ago I was visiting a friend. I had stuffed up sinuses. She made

me some goldenseal tea. When I was halfway through the cup I told her it must be

getting stronger because I could smell and taste it better than when I started.

She said it was because my nose had cleared with just half the cup. Well DUH!!!

Felt pretty dumb! LOL

There is quite a bit of Organically Cultivated Goldenseal out there at this

point. I suggest only using organically cultivated herbs in most cases. That

way we are not putting udue stress on the wild populations. Unless someone

is consciously wildcrafting for their own use...not a huge commercial

use...Oregon Grape has seen an increase in stress since it has been

recommended as an alternate for Goldenseal :-)

C-M,

What are your tips for growing goldenseal? And where does one find it

in the first place?

Thanks for any info! I'd love to be able to grow some!! :-)

Hi Kelly:

It's Jenn in Oregon but right now, in California. It's beautiful here

now but lots of tornado like funnel things on the way down here that did

a lot of damage. You should see the damage of the houses in Los Angeles

area. Just all sliding off the hill tops . It's a real shame but I

wouldn't ever have bought one there in the first place. Just seeing

where they sit would be enough to stop me, LOL, Hope all is well with

everyone on list . You too, Kelly.

Huggs,

Jenn
