My sweet little 19mth old boy spent the night in hospital on Sat

after (query) a febrile convulsion. He's ok now....

For the last 5 or so weeks he's been poorly on and off with colds,

tummy upsets etc. One morning he woke up and was patting his head

saying " ow, ow, ow! " We'd had him to the Docs a couple of times,

but were always told that it's just whatever was going around at the

time.

Anyway, on Sat evening he was running a temp, so we gave him baby

paracetamol and he went to bed ok. He woke at around midnight

screaming and went as stiff as a board, trembling. His temp wasn't

particularly high, but we dosed him up again and waited. In the

meantime he was lying in my arms and was slipping in and out of

consciousness - he definitely wasn't going to sleep. I noticed as I

held him that he seemed to be getting very hot again and when I took

his temp I was scared. We rushed him off to hospital. At our

nearest hospital they examined him and were going to send him home -

just a viral infection they said - but protocol said that after a

first time febrile convulsion patients should stay overnight. There

wasn't a bed for him there, so they took him over to the hospital in

the next town where he was examined again. This time the Doc said

he detected some signs of bacterial infection in his ear and that he

had a possible sinus infection which could have caused all the on

off symptoms that he had been experiencing over the last few weeks.

We have been prescribed an antibiotic syrup and anitbiotic nose

drops. I've been giving him the syrup, but the they didn't have the

nose drops at the time and I haven't been able to get them from our

local chemist as yet. I'm not too keen on the nose drops, because I

can't imagine they'll be much fun, if not impossible to administer

to a wriggly 19mth old little boy. So, what I was thinking of was

vaporising eos with antibacterial properties for the rest of the

week in the hope that they'll help with the sinus infection, and

that the syrup will do the rest of the work.

What does the list think and what eos would you recommend?

Wendy, I am so glad that you asked that question. I am an adult and I have the

same thing when my sinuses really get infected. I have the trembling and get

stiff as a board for over 25 years. It is like you have the chills and can't

quit shaking. Guess, in a way you are as your fever is so high. The first time

my kids saw me they thought I was dying. You do drift in and out of

consciousness and I have a very high fever. There is never an answer from drs

to 'why' I do this. I can go for long periods of time without one and bam I

have alot in a few weeks period. I know when my sinuses are giving me problems

as the bones in the sinus cavity hurt so bad. Also, I have friends who go

through the same thing.

I am very interesting in what anyone in the groups has to say about this.

Again, thanks for bringing this subject up...

Vicki

Hi Wendy,

I'm glad that your scary story has a happy ending (for the most part).

First thing I would do if my wee ones had to be on an anti-biotic is to

make sure that I get some pro-biotics going in their daily routine to

counter the nasty side effects from the anti-biotics. There is a liquid

acidophilus available that can be taken as is or added to something that

is already pro-biotic, such as yogurt (so many kids love yogurt but

since cow's milk isn't so great to give to a stuffy mucousy kid look for

the non bovine dairy yogurts available such as goat's yogurt or soy

yogurt, even though I don't generally advocate eating much soy, I'd

consider it in this circumstance for a week or two).

When my little ones have gotten ill I've done some herbs, homeopathy and

aromatherapy. I'm not going to go into the homeopathy right now, but

here is our general herbal/aromatherapy routine ... echinacea (E.

angustifolia root)drops .. 2 drops once per hour while acute. Herbs for

Kids blend (the proper blend depends on the ailment) 3 times a day ...

I make up an oregano flavoring oil for their food. I put 2 -3 drops into

about 50 ml of olive oil (just enough to have the faintest of flavors)

and drizzle that onto eggs, pasta, garlic bread, into soup, etc ...

I have an after bath chest and foot rub that combines small amounts of

an EO blend that includes Gully Gum Eucalyptus (E. smithii), Peppermint

(mentha piperita), Turkish Sage (Salvia fruticosa) & Turkish Lavender

(L. stoechas). It is a very mild blend, only about 1 - 2% diluted in

unscented lotion.

I use a diffuser blend that is very similar to the chest/foot rub, but

added to that is Oregano (any variety high in carvacrol) & Lemon Myrtle

(Backhousia citriodora).

Also, we don't generally break fevers. A fever is basically the body's

furnace heating up to kill bad bugs. Unlike adults, little kids can

handle a fever of 105 even without life threatening problem as long as

they are properly tended to. Here is a wonderful article to read

regarding kids health which touches on fever, antibiotics, etc ...

Also in the group's files section

http://health.

there is a folder called " Articles by Dr. Incao " . He is our family

physician and there are some really wonderful articles in there

including on called " Tending the Flame " and another called " Inflammation

and Infection " . Definitely worth reading!

I hope your little one is all better soon! Nothing worse than having a

sick wee one and not being able to make it all better in a snap.

OH ... I totally forgot to mention Vitamin C! There is a product called

Emergen-C for Kids which I love, but it has fructose, so its not the

best out there. IMHO the BEST Vitamin C available is Gary Null's Suprema

C powder in Cherry flavor. Even the kids love it, and its wonderful for

mega dosing when necessary.

When the kids even show the first sign of nasty colored boogers, I dose

'em up with vitamin C and the snots go clear within an hour! (Can y'all

tell that I am around kids WAAAY too much from my descriptions ;)
