Guest guest
Hello good and knowledgeable people!!! I received a shipment of eos today. I of course took them all out to check them out immediately. :-) I left the oils sitting on my desk and stepped outside to have my coffee. I came back inside about a half an hour later. The oil bottles were all scattered on the floor. I figured a cat jumped up there being nosy and knocked them over. I started collecting them and noticed that the catnip bottle label was a bit mangled. This cat must have smelled the residual oil on the bottle or smelled it from my quick initial open and sniff! So I made sure the lid was on tight (it was) and walked away. No sooner did I walk away the cat (Pierre) was up there again with his nose on that bottle. I had to put it away so he couldn't find it. This should have been obvious to me I suppose but I was just surprised how quickly he picked up that smell! This is the same cat who comes running as soon as we cut an avocado or cantaloupe....oh and he loves potato skins too. Mighty hunter, he. At any rate, I know essential oils should not be used directly on cats. Exactly how much exposure is too much and is there any way to let the cats enjoy the catnip oil or should we just stick to the catnip plant?? Cat people?? We have 5 cats but this one is the only one who seemed to notice the oil. Thanks!! Terri
Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, He is a strange one for sure...but his senses do seem to be quite acute and the few times we've given catnip (leaves) he is the one who becomes the most maniacal. He is Pierre Le Fluff (the cat formerly known as Marshmallow).... Diffusing in the home is ok I presume? Not continuously, perhaps a few times each day and not throughout the entire house and only for usually about a half an hour at a time.... I've got a few catnip seedlings started in fact...I'm surprised he hasn't found his way onto the seeds table to get into them. We did go to great lengths to make it cat proof though (live and learn). I had a cat that liked raisons and Mustard.... ) Stick with catnip leaves for him and keep the oil out of his reach. Both of you are better of in the long run that way! Cheers! Guest guest
oh I have to chime in here. Mine went ballistic for catnip oil. I offered A DROP. I am not interested in giving my little guy (? he's 20 lbs and all muscle, beautiful hyuuuuuuge black puma looking guy) any EOs a la YL!! He loves the fresh plant the best, as all good dope is best fresh ;-)... but he likes, of all things, beer and Indian food. Oh, and red onion. I am not sure who he was in a past life, but he sure has good taste now. Mo On Behalf Of Woobey Queen Thursday, May 19, 2005 8:09 PM RE: catnip oil...and cats LOL! Mine won't go near the stuff and until just this evening I hadn't heard of any who did. Most seem to really dislike it. Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Terri, Some cats go crazy over catnip, some could care less - its apparently genetic - grin. I put a drop of catnip eo on one of their favourite toys, and once its dry, let them have at it. There was a bottle of Catmint essential oil and it is the only time my cat has ever done this with any oil. He got to the box, knocked everything out on the floor and drooled all over the Catmint bottle (only). The label was totally soaked and in pieces. He WANTED this stuff. Luckily I had no need for it. I suppose I could plant some outdoors for him- it is lovely. He does enjoy fresh catnip but not like other cats I know. Catmint also puts off insects in the garden and is nice at the entryway (and it's pretty). I am glad this is the only time anything like this has happened as I have a huge quantity of essential oils and have no interest in cat and oils mixing. Guest guest
I had a nice large, full catnip plant in my front herb bed last week. Did you notice I said had ? Went out there to pull weeds yesterday and now I have a nice large, full catnip plant that is all stems !!! They dang cats shredded all the leaves off of it ! I have wild catnip growing all over my yard so it's no big deal, I still have many, many more catnip plants Even my dogs like catnip. The cats love chips too. If they can get to the bag, they will reach in, extend their claws so that they snag only 1 chip, cheese curl, bacon rind, etc, and pull it out and eat it. Once it's all gone, they'll get another. One time I caught one of the cats sitting in a chair at the table in front of a bag of cheese curls and the dogs and other cat sitting in a half circle on the floor around him. The cat would pull out one at a time and toss them to the dogs and other cat !! We stood behind the door watching until those 4 footed, furry pigs ate every cheese curl that was left in the bag. Sure wished I had a video camera for that !! Paula .......... in Michigan ROFL! ONIONS? BEER? How funny. So thats TWO cats now that like catnip oil. Guest guest
and can you imagine the stoned cats after eating that plant??? My Sammy is just off the scales if he eats fresh stuff... he acts as if it's more potent than dried...so imagine a whole plant affecting one of them. Sammy will only lick the goodies off of the chips I give him. His fave is nacho cheese Doritos. I find little soggy plain chip pieces everywhere. Yes, this is onion and indian food boy. He obviously has a preference for spicy things. I just cannot picture your cat passing out the food like that... unreal. Guest guest
My cat's an ice cream freak--she'll risk certain beating for a shot at licking an empty bowl. Don't tell Honey, but I let her have just the tiniest last little bit sometimes, off the spoon. Keeps her out of the bowl and her hide intact. Serra On 5/20/05, M. Guest guest
awwwwwww! I won't tell. Does she like yogurt? Sam's all over yogurt. Although once he did get his head stuck in a B & J container.... that was pretty funny.
