Guest guest
The veins in your swollen veins in your throat is called esophagial varices is a direct result of drinking alcohol. Often it's combined with smoking. The veins in the esophagas dilate. It doesn't matter how many years ago it was when you took your last drink. The damage was already done. This is nothing to play around with, it's very serious. The veins can burst due to the dilitation and hemorrage can result. It's also possible the veins to the and in the spleen are enlarged due to trying to produce red blood cells to the rest of the body. What's the docs treatment plan of care? Guest guest
I have a friend that has never had a drink in his life and the Dr. is trying to convince him that his problem is his drinking and not something the Dr. is giving him. Absolutely does not believe Bill when he says he doesn't drink. Zo Does anyone have any ideas as to what would help, thought I hhad a bleeding ulcer! test show elarged veins in the throat and an enlarged spleen. doc is trying to convince me that alcoholism is the cause!! Well I did have some wild times many years ago, but I rarely drink, perhaps a vodka tonic when I got out for a meal [and that doesn't happen often!!!] and go months without as much as a glass of wine, so I really don't think alcoholism is the cause here. I am taking Milk thistle as I read that is very good for the liver. Any other ideas please, I don't know what to do and really feel alone through all of this. BooHoo woe is me etc!! Guest guest
Acupuncturists and tradicional Chinese medicine practicioners know a lot about the spleen, that could possibly be worth more than a try Thanks, Joel > I have a friend that has never had a drink in his life and the Dr. is > trying > to convince him that his problem is his drinking and not something > the Dr. > is giving him. Guest guest
Hi Zo, An enlarged spleen is usually caused by too many blood cells being pulled out the circulation too rapidly for the spleen to recycle them. It might be because the red blood cells are malformed and not 'doughnut' shaped or they had something called inclusion bodies in them or 'nucleated' (rbc's don't have a nucleus). It can also be a case where they have been tagged with antibodies and then the spleen pulls them out. It could also be pulling platelets or white blood cells, too. Too many things can cause an enlarged spleen--even certain infections. I can't think of alcohol causing this but I'M NOT A DOCTOR so I can't say for sure--I am only saying a few things that I can remember causing enlarged spleen. The liver and pancreas are usually the target organs in alcohol abuse. In any case, maybe a 2nd opinion?? an enlarged spleen is a serious matter. Good luck! and HTH. Guest guest
Uhh careful with this... many times the word " Spleen " in a TCM context refers to what we call thepPancreas. At school, our teacher used to say " Spleen/Pancreas " rather than just one. My understanding is that what we call the spleen is considered to play a very minor role in the body by TCM practitioners. Ditto for Chinese herbs indicated for " Spleen " . Chinese herbs are for TCM diagnoses, not Western. See an acupuncturist/chinese herbalist before taking anything. -Josh >Acupuncturists and tradicional Chinese medicine practicioners know a lot >about the spleen, >that could possibly be worth more than a try
