Guest guest
Heiko, I would like to create such a program too, as it would help in exam writing, etc. Is it done using a " macro " type function (I seem to recall from the old DOS days that you could do that but in the Windows world I don't know how). I noticed the trend you speak of; in John Chen's book that is about to be published (or maybe already has been?) he puts the part of the plant after the genus and species names, but I haven't seen this in any other works. Speaking of conventions, does no one capitalize the pin yin words any more? I think they are so much more " friendly " when capitalized. The worst is when they are all run together, like mudanpi. I am not sure that was ever convention,at least not in actual asian studies. Wiseman does not capitalize any pinyin in his dictionary, including herb names. while unschuld use wade giles, he only capitalizes names of books, people or first word of a sentence. He does not capitalize herb names though. Bensky uses lower case for pinyin in his materia medica, as well Flaws capitalizes the pinyin of herb names in his books, though. The argument can be made that they are proper nouns, however the argument can also be made that the distinction between upper and lower case does really exist in chinese. Nevertheless, unschuld often hyphenates herb names and Fruehauf often combines two pinyin terms into one, but I am not sure of his rationale. In any event, such conventions can't really apply to this list. For me, typing is difficult enough without concerning myself with upper/ lower case. Mushing of words is often a typo, so that is excusable as well, but should be best avoided for clarity's sake.
