Guest guest
Hey all....I was told that a MD - allopathic doctor could not prescribe herbs to his patients. If they did they could lose their license and be fined. Is this true?????? TIA....Peggy
Guest guest
Hi Peggy, I don't know about losing a license, but my mother recently had a discussion with her doctor that I found disturbing. She wanted to go off of HRT and was inquiring about alternatives. Her doctor did not give her much advice until my mother mentioned some different soy supplements. Her doctor *then* told her that she herself used natural products and thought that they may be beneficial to my mom. She then asked her doctor why she had not mentioned this to her before and was told that as an MD, the pharmaceutical companys would take some kind of financial recourse against her if she encouraged any natural or herbal medications!! She also told my mother that she felt that women should not use HRT for extended periods of time and felt these meds had more negative side effects than benefits. She also told her that she believed in natural therapies, but could not discuss this with a patient unless they asked!!! Guest guest
I don't see why not. They tell you to eat this, or not eat that, so why not herbs? They are not trained as herbalists, so as Dr.s they can not ethically " prescribe " something that is outside what they are trained in (all of those years in medical school). They may or may not have anything relevant to say about herbs. It would be like asking your Dr what kind of car he thinks you should buy. Maybe he knows about cars and maybe he does not, but he knows a lot about what he is trained in- western medicine ;-) That is not to say that an MD may or may not have a *non professional* opinion about herbs and other " alternatives " and certainly some may have more knowledge and experience than others. MD's like scientific measurable results and research. Most Dr.s will make a disclaimer of some sort if you ask their opinion on an herbal vs an allopathic medicine. They will also offer a diclaimer if you ask what *they* would do or take for ...whatever it is. After all they are not there to say what they would do. As far as I am concerned that is ethical. I'd not want an unqualified MD advising me on herbal medicines. There are strict ethical codes they agree to in order to practice with a license. Makes sense. There ARE Dr.s trained in both who work with both. I have such a Dr- an internist in NY who is a top Cornell University trained Dr. plus a Traditional Dr, who works with herbs, acupuncture, etc. An expert in both realms. Certainly Dr.s like Dr. Andrew Weil have made this sort of combined approach more credible to the mainstream. Guest guest
I don't know if it's true or not....but years ago when several rounds of antibiotics didn't get rid of an ear infection, I ended up using garlic/mullein drops....which worked very successfully, I might add. When I went back to the doctor to be checked the last time (had to fly that week or I wouldn't even have gone back), he said he was glad I did that...he had wanted to recommend that but was unable to do so, he said, because it would raise " complications " or " issues " . About 2 or 3 years later, he left his practice and went into alternative medicine...don't remember all the details. Guest guest
I don't take HRT either...several years ago when I went for my yearly check up the doc wanted to put me on hormones. I refused, he just couldn't understand why I would refuse...I told him my grandmother went thru the change early & never took anything, my mom also went thru the change early & never took anything & womenfolk thruout history didn't take anything! It is a natural part of lives & I embrace it & don't make a big deal about it. Sure I have mood swings, hot flashes & have become a little more " don't take no s**t from nobody, but again, its just as natural as having a period so why mess with it! My gyn has since tried to put me on other meds & when I refuse he just laughs & says ok...he's pretty cool about it. Anyway, just my 2 cents!! Have a great evening!! donna Donna Buchholz Something Different Soap & Things
Guest guest
I don't take Hormone Replacement Therapy my self. The Doc told me that he would have to check (pelvic exam ) often for cancer. I took it for a month and my monthly came back. I dumped them and would not go back on them. I don t know of a herb to take so I live each day without taking anything. I had friends tell me that I am making a big mistake. I'm sad to say that one of my friends had had cancer two times and now say that she think it was the Hormone Replacement Therapy. I forget, have hot flashes often. I don't spot often but other than that I am doing good. The conventional doc works hand in hand with the druggist and the undertaker. Doc gives the drugs that cure nothing only deal with the symptoms so you keep coming back with a side order of the creeps due to meds. Druggist sock it to the doc and to us. He keeps us going to the doc and we pay to buy what could be death. Undertaker is happy because as long as there is the sick, there will be docs. As long as there is Docs there will be druggist. as long as there is druggist there will be the dead. As long as there is the dead there will be undertakers. I am here to learn all that I can, help others as well as my self, feel good get healthy and stay alive. BTW, without the Hormone Replacement Therapy my voice is the same. I don't have to shave and dh is happy. Now if I could just find a cooling system for one. LOL Lady D Shalom (Peace) ---- Ieneke van Houten 11/20/05 00:47:32 Re: Conventional doc & herbs?
