A patient of mine emailed the following to me, so I thought I'd see if anyone has ideas: Imola (8 years old) has been throwing up for about two months now. Along with the throwing up is a super gurgly tummy. The vomiting is normally on an empty stomach and consists of foamy/bubbly stuff. She also goes for eating grass like there's no tomorrow... We've been to the vet a few times, physical exam found nothing out of the ordinary. The suggestion from the Vet was a low daily dose of Prilosec a human anti-heartburn med. The thinking was that since she only eats once a day or once every day and a half that it was a stomach acid issue. The Prilosec didn't have much of an effect. Next the vet tested blood and stool looking for anything out of the ordinary, nothing stood out. I'm starting to think the grass is the cause of the vomiting and not a symptom of the stomach ache. Do you have any insight on what could cause a dog to be feasting on grass? _______________ Hotmail: Powerful Free email with security by Microsoft. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/171222986/direct/01/
Guest guest
I went through almost the exact thing with my dog and we almost lost her. We traced the beginning of her digestive problem to a vaccine she had been given to protect her from bacteria in other animals urine. I can't remember the name of the vaccine but it is routinely given by vets to dogs that walk in the woods where there is other wildlife. The vaccine, according to the Veterinary school at Northwestern causes serious digestive issues in some dogs. My dod was eating grass constantly and throwing up white foamy liquid all the time. Her recovery was difficult and included a remedial diet of mostly white rice and probiotics. Guest guest
Hi, I was wondering why you only feed your dog once a day. I had a Lhasa Apso that would vomit this foamy yellow bile if she didn't eat early enough and had to wait for breakfast- and her stomach would also gurgle.? I always fed her twice a day but she was very sensitive and would get sick if she had to wait.? The vet said that small dogs often get low blood sugar on only one meal so they really need to eat twice a day - also for behavior reasons dogs are often calmer with 2 meals.? When they feel nauseous they will often eat grass to make them vomit and then feel better. Sincerely, > Patricia Jordan DVM,CVA,CTCVM & Herbology While a TCM Dx may be the best way to go, symptomatic acupuncture is worth a try. From my Acupuncture Cookbook [ http://homepage.eircom.net/~progers/ad2.htm ], the main acupoints for Middle Jiao problems (including emaciation, anorexia and digestive problems / malabsorption / emesis / diarrhoea etc) are: (1) ST36, SP06, PC06, CV12; (2) with 1-2 points from BL20, BL21, CV06, ST25; (3) and maybe one point from BL22, BL51, CV13, LI04, LV03, LV13, SP04. I would try these twice / week for 2-3 sessions and show owner how to massage them. Best regards,
