According to Wenlin software, the character [shao] means tip, end of a

twig; top (of a tree); tip; tail end; boat rudder; end (of a matter)

 

Gancaoshao is from the same plants as Gancao, but is the fine tips of its

roots. It differs from Gancao in some actions / uses:

 

Gancao is classed as a Qi Tonic and is Even (neither Hot nor Cold].

In contrast, Gancaoshao is classed as a Clear Fire / Heat~ internal med and

is COLD.
