Guest guest
Hi, I have recently decided to charge $10 more than the going rate per visit since I am an herbalist. I'm wondering if anyone else is doing this, and if not, why? I resisted this idea for a long time because I didn't think the acupuncture-only patients should have to pay more, but lately it hit me that since I went to school longer and since studying and practicing herbs has deepened my knowledge base I deserve to be paid more per visit even when I am not using herbs with patients. I think that my acupuncture-only patients benefit from my deepened knowledge base a great deal, so it makes sense to me now. Since we are pioneers in our field I think we need to think about these things so that we set up our field to be fair to us. Any thoughts? Guest guest
laura: this is an interesting angle i hadn't considered. i am also an herbalist: 90% of my patients take individualized formulas (raw or gran) that i compound at my clinic for them during their visit. for this reason, i see less patients than an acu only acupuncturist, or someone prescribing patent herbs. the patients get significantly more of my time and focused attention pet visit, as i see one patient at a time, than an acu only or acu and patent herb practitioner who can juggle several rooms simultaneously, therefore less time per patient. i am on the higher end of the fee schedule than many other practitioners in my area, but hadn't thought of it in terms of add'l training/edu/experience and time per patient. in considering your point of view, i might want to articulate that a bit more in my marketing. kath On Tue, Feb 9, 2010 at 10:16 PM, heylaurag <heylaurag wrote: > > > Hi, I have recently decided to charge $10 more than the going rate per > visit since I am an herbalist. Guest guest
Well, this opens lots of cans of worms. In 2007 I took a year-long Colorpuncuncture course. When all was said and done I spent $10,000 with equipment. I do charge more when I do full color treatments. I use to charge a bit more when I just added shorter treatments. Will I ever make up the cost for the training? Not any time soon. However, it pushed me as a practitoner and I definetly add it to what I bring to any treatment room. I also studied herbs for a year after that. Not as expensive, but very time consuming. The sale of patent herbs increased my revenue. I only prescribe them to acupuncture patients. I think a granule herbal pharmacy can bring in a lot more revenue. BTW I think all of the trainings I do increase my knowledge and skills as a practitioner. (I did Sacred Geometry workshops last year, $2000; and now going into a Mind/Body Healing workshop $1000, the list goes on ). Laura, I don't know where you are located or how much you are charging now. I think these things make a difference. I am not in favor of raising rates in a recession, unless they are already depressed. I think you mentioned before about needing to operate more efficiently. I think that is the place to start. Then you can see more herbal clients and be paid more of what you are worth. In relation to Kath's comments. I think it is great to see one herbal patient per hour. Just be sure your herb charge is fair for you. I would say 100% markup. That is what I do with patents. Seeing two acupuncture clients per hour is more exhausting than 1 herbal patient per hour (usually) - just make sure you are being compensated well. Maybe the herb visits should be 1/2 hour. For now, Anne Anne C. Crowley, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac. www.LaPlataAcupuncture.com - " heylaurag " <heylaurag " Traditional " <Chinese Medicine > Tuesday, February 9, 2010 10:16:07 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern  herbalists charge more per visit?  Hi, I have recently decided to charge $10 more than the going rate per visit since I am an herbalist. Guest guest
Yes, everything you just described is true of me as well. I see fewer patients per week than acupuncture only practitioners or those who use mostly patents. To do a good job as an herbalist takes time and energy. I think we should be charging significantly more, actually. But for now I am going to only charge $10 a visit more. Over time I hope to increase that amount because it will only benefit me when I have a non-insurance patient, so it will only help a little. Yes, we make some money on herbs, but nowhere near enough considering how much time and energy it takes to really work deeply with herbs and also since we too have to pay for the herbs. I hope others will do this as well--we need to be fair to ourselves. Guest guest
Just as a point of reference, I see alot of patients for herb consults and charge $90 for the initial and $40 for follow ups plus the cost of the herbs (with a 100% mark up). They are very happy because they get well and they are able to save money or avoid pointy things....I am actually considering raising my rates on this next year. Guest guest
bob: i would encourage you to raise the herb rates. i also am charging $90 for the initial consult (no tx) but i charge $60 for herb follow ups. this is for individulized herbal rx (raw or gran) that i compound at my pharm, generally while they wait. i do 100% mark-up for gran and patents, not sure what the mark-up works out to be for raw: i charge by the gram for raw and gran. i generally tell them to expect to pay $25-45/week for cost of herbs (raw is on the higher end, higher end with herbs like ginseng, tian ma and so on). k On Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 4:36 PM, Bob Linde, AP, Herbalist < boblindeherbalist wrote: > > > Just as a point of reference, I see alot of patients for herb consults and > charge $90 for the initial and $40 for follow ups plus the cost of the herbs > (with a 100% mark up). Guest guest
Yeah, I don't know where you are, but I think that's low. I charge 130 for an intake and 95 for follow up, regardless of whether I do herbs only or herbs plus acupuncture. But I do always do acupuncture, so it is different from you.
