OM annual office visit?

i've been getting cards & calls from my vet, optometrist and dentist about

getting in for annual exams/cleanings.

i wondered if we could brainstorm about some type of annual service we could

provide as OM practitioners that our patients would feel necessary to have

done. i'm not thinking about a west PE, i'm thinking something we would

offer from an OM perspective that might need to be done annually. i'm not

sure that a tune-up tx suits the bill. in my area, patients don't feel an

impetus to do these. maybe there's a way to present them that would include

a sense of urgency and necessity, like these annual exams.

the annual exam is a great mkting strategy to get the patient in the office

for eval for future services. if we could come up with something, perhaps

we could work with acu media works to develop a reminder card to send out

about the service. it should be something we can sell to acu patients, so

they all feel it's something you do when you are using OM.

As OM practitioners we should be telling all of our patients that they should

come in for tune-up every season. All of my patients come in every 3 months.

Therefore, we should be sending our patients reminder cards every three months.

This is something Alex Tiberi taught me when I worked in his clinic years ago as

a student. Most of my patients are very compliant.

I agree with Donald, every change of season, and there is no excuse to skip the

winter-spring and summer-fall transitions. These season " tune-ups " are not

whimsical or unnecessary. In fact I find them to be pivotal. I " lost " a patient

for almost 3 months because we didn't plan properly for the summer-fall

transition and we were totally unprepared when the " storm " hit. If you work with

sufficiently ill people you will see that there is quite a bit of urgency to the

seasonal preparations. I could have helped this lady avoid 9 weeks worth of

prednisone had I been on the ball and respectful of the season change.

i've not been successful in selling the tune-up idea. not sure if it's my

pitch or my area. i'm suspecting its my area. they just want to come in

when they are sick or have sx, don't get the prevention concept of coming in

for wellness.

how do you present/sell it?

I try and educate my patients from the first visit that is

great for many ailments but that prevention is where it really comes into it's

own.

Also, another marketing tool is to invite your patients to come in for a

birthday treatment ,at least that way you don't lose track of them and they feel

special that you remember them. Throw in a free foot massage or a big hug or

whatever other birthday celebrations you can think of. If you are into the Stems

and Branches then of course you can treat them at the birthdate and time of

birth if possible provide a big tonic.

Hi Kath -

I had a rather large practice based in part on annual visits in the Berkshires

of Massachusetts during the 90s.

First, has to do with the Dr. - Patient contract. Is it for short, medium or

long term care? Short term relates to a chief complaint. For me, medium term

relates to issues surrounding constitution and whole life imbalances related to

the clinical goals. Long term has to do with longevity and preserving health

over time.

It is this latter which can be served by annual visits. I do a thorough pulse

assessment for baseline, look at risk profiles and consider the most likely

tracks of mortality and morbidity for the patient. I then prescribe diet,

lifestyle and supplement programs (including Chinese herbs in the superior grade

class). This format works well in my experience.

Warmly,

Will

Acupuncture Media Works offers postcards that invite people to come back; you

may want to check it out.

I personally must say that I ignore those cards when I receive them from

providers.

I send a snail mail newsletter to my clients every second month, and that brings

some older clients in, especially if I include an offer.

I am also considering using a monthly email services. The cosmetic clinic I am

going to is using it and although I spend very little time looking at it, I do

tend to look if they have any specials that I am interested in.

If you are interested in sending emails, check out a site called

" ConstantContact. " it has great features and is inexpensive.

What offers do I use?

I try to vary it a bit, and some are " fake " offers.

After I purchased the Acugraph I offered free Acugraph assessments with any

standard office visit;

on Xmas, I send a $20 gift certificate, applicable to any service in the

clinic;

this month I offer 50% off the cosmetic package of 10 treatments;

in January I offered a community services day, free treatments, on Martin

Luther King Day.

I have done community service days in the past for Veterans (on Veterans

Day) for smokers, (On the great American smoke out), for Cancer survivors

( on race for the cure day), etc. (Community services days often generate

publicity);

I have worked trades with massage therapists, where they give me gift

certificates, and I give an hour-long free massage to the first 5 clients in

the new year, etc, etc.
