Linda,

The last thing I would ever suggest would be gentian violet. Acidophilus

and organic yogurt with live bacteria is what he needs. If he is

breastfeeding,

Mom needs treatment too or they will continue to re-infect each other.

Hi Linda,

If it were me and mine, I'd using the herb Taheebo (Pau D'arco)! My

herbology teacher was very fond of it, and especially for Thrush.

She always said it was best made into a strong decoction which could

then be used as an external wash for the breasts and baby's mouth, as

well as drunk as a tea to provide mama and baby the benefits while

nursing.

Hello,

My 6 month old grandson has thrush. Any tried and true remedies out

there besides Gentian Violet which stains everything purple that it

touches.

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Ariel,

Try mixing  a couple of drops of pure tea tree oil with coconut oil and apply

to the nipples after each feeding. Gently rinse nipples in warm water and pat

dry before feeding.   Coconut oil is the source of the nutraceutical

anti-candida medication, Caprylic acid and tea tree oil (melaleuca oil)  is a

powerful, yet gentle anti-microbial and anti-fungal which is readily

available--even Trader Joe's has it.  They are readily absorbed, and are safe

for your baby as well.

I've had great results using Gentian Violet topically. Pharmacies usually have

it or they can order it. You want a 1% solution, not 2%. Apply with q-tip

before nursing. The baby will have a purple face (good photo op), and it can

stain clothes so have the mom wear a shirt she doesn't mind staining (same with

baby's clothes). Check out kellymom.com for more details (also a great source

for moms). After nursing she can apply a bit of extra virgin olive oil to

nipples and let dry. Olive oil has antimicrobial properties. Diluted vinegar

is also good for this purpose (she can alternate which she uses after

nursing...thrush is stubborn so it's best to come at it from a few angles).

Always let breasts " air out " after nursing, since the yeast that causes thrush

thrives in a warm moist environment.
