Guest guest
You must read " Breaking The Vicious Cycle " , by Elaine Gottschall. Buy the book, buy several books and give a copy to the child's parents, to your practitioner-friends, anyone interested. Elaine passed away a few years ago; during her life her efforts saved so many people that a group formed around her, based in Canada (whose name I cannot recall, but search her name or the book title and you will find it) that rescues people with crohn's, UC, diverticulitis, celiac dz, cystic fibrosis and diarrheal-diseases following Elaine's system. Out of desperation when her daughter was dying from (if I recall) UC, she found an an old german doctor in New York who taught her how to save her daughter, a little older than this girl, from the colostomy that is the Western Med cure. You must read the book, the child's parents must read the book and follow the dietary cure, and it is a cure, the intestines will recover and heal, the intestinal villi will repopulate the intestines after some time, not weeks, month, but a year or more.... I know this first-hand and it works! Do not stop the yunnan paiyao as long as the child is bleeding. The loss of blood will deplete the girl's blood, yin, qi and finally yang and she will develop even more morbidaties... Years ago I could get Butyric Acid liquid for enema, from Tyler Pharmaceutical, but they dropped the product. Butyric acid smells like rotten butter, gives feces part of it's awefull smell, but it is the food that intestinal villi live on. If you can get dilute Butyric Acid enemas into the child's intestine as a retention enema (as long as she can hold it, but make it dilute) the bleeding will stop and the intestinal lining will heal. You can find it online, or go to a compounding pharmacy and they can put it together for you. If you manage to get the parents and child to cooperate and follow the diet recommendations in the book, the butyric acid can replace the yunnan paiyao... yunnan paiyao can also be used as an enema, very, very dilute, but it is harsh and should only be used in an emergency as an implant to stop the bleeding. Finally, if the girl's parents can afford to go to Canada it would serve their daughter well. I believe they have a healing center in Canada, again, this was true years ago, and can be searched online to confirm. Years ago we had a case here in Dallas/Fort Worth of a child whose father (divorced from the mom) took his daughter to Canada to save her from the Western Med Cure (against the mom's wishes}, and the courts extradited the girl and she was surgically " cured " . This does not have to happen. Finally, everyone should support the magazine, The Townsend Letter, to whom I have d almost consistently since acupuncture school in 88, without The Townsend Letter I would have never discovered Elaine Gottschall and her wonderful work. Blessings and good luck! Moderate to Severe Pancolitis Ulcerative Colitis Case: 4 year old female. Onset July 2009. To date, the patient has had 3 UC " flares " 2 of which were handled in the hospital (prednisone, prevacid, pentasa, IV steroids…) with this last one being solely handled with chinese herbs and diet. Flares: Have all been preceded by viral pathogen. Constipation has also preceded flares. One flare also had introduced bifidus just before flare. Patient has seen Naturopaths, Dieticians, DOM's, GI's…The next step from the GI specialist is to go on sulfasalazine, immuron and 6mg prednisone every other day for up to 1 year. If that didn't work they will recommend surgery. History: Vaginal birth IV antibiotics for 3 days when first born Full vaccinations Severe cradle cap as child Reflux as baby, colic, burping curdled formula (Enfamil/SMA) (breastfed 4 months) Started solids at 6 months Always picky eater Diaper rash which was treated with hydrocortisone Eczema. No asthma. Allergic to cats (itchy on abdomen). Diagnosed with stomach erosion Anemic Recent stool analysis positive for unknown taxonomy parasite and low levels of pancreatic enzymes Last year had odd limping which doctor said was from virus and would go away and did. Presentation: Dark circles under eyes Pale complexion Cold hands/nose Night sweats (worse with prednisone, but there presently as well without medications) Low appetite Parents report: Some what fearful. More so now with doctors and treatments. Has become quieter. 3 small bumps in a line on index finger (I have thought they were flat warts/viral) GI: 1-2 bm's/day. Will occasionally skip a day. Not much abdominal pain. BM's vary between mushy and fully formed. Have become more formed with Chinese herbs and diet. Parents report stomach bloating. Increased burps, bloating and hiccups recently. Some blood streaked bm's for past month. Some mucus with stool. Stool often comes out formed at first and then mushy at the end. Patient came to my office Jan. 2010. I have only seen her in person 1 time. She lives in Canada. She was not in a flare when she came in. She was on prednisone, prevacid and pentasa. She finished her taper of prednisone on 2/17/2010. On 2/19/2010 she had blood streaked bm. Parents also reported that she had slight cold at this time and had been sniffling on and off for 2 weeks. (They reported that during the last flare she had bled a small amount for 1 week and then blood started pouring out). She has basically had a low lying cold for past month. The bleeding has just been drops and will go days without any blood. When her bm is harder, the bleeding will come back. When her stool is mushy, there is usually no bleeding. Herbal Treatments: Acute bleeding: Yunnan paiyao Kan: Hemorrease (Huai Jiao Wan) stop bleeding, disperse wind, clear heat and damp Far East Summit: Hemostatic Coptis root 7 Forests: Imperata (stop bleeding, clear heat) 7 Forests: Picrorrhiza (similar Bai Tou Weng formula) External Wind-cold: Gentle Warriors: Windbreaker, Chest Relief, Pipe Cleaner Chronic UC tx: 7 Forests Atractylodes (based on Jianpi Ling) Gentle Warriors: Grow and Thrive Pain: 7 Forests Peony formula as needed for pain (really helps) She is currently taking yunnan baiyao, hemorrease, atractylodes, imperata, and picrorrhiza. She continues to have small amounts of blood but not a full flare with diarrhea and severe bleeding. I was treating her with the idea that I needed to nurture spleen qi and not be too draining. Since going to Alex Tiberi's pediatric seminar last month, I started her on the picrorrhiza formula with the idea of clearing more heat. I would like to get her off of the yunnan paiyao as I'm not sure how long it is safe to keep her on it or if it is even necessary. I have again recommended that they see someone regularly for treatments and do herbal enemas. Update 3/26/2010: When we decrease the yunnan paiyao the bleeding increases. She is now having increased amounts of blood with every stool (still 1 stool/day) and today there was a large clot. Not much mucus. They are now willing to try an herbal enema tonight. Guest guest
Dear colleagues, I am thankful for Mr David Tarlo for his detailed descriptions of the treatment method. As a Chinese medicine professional, bleeding with mucus in stool is definitely an internal condition and symptoms such as hiccup, bloating, bleeding, mucus in stools, poor appetite can definitely be treated with herbal medicine. I also believe herbal medicine would work in a more comprehensive way than that of acupuncture, if not better off. Particularly in her case, kids are usually scared of needling. As for long-term diet issue, TCM definitely has a lot to offer, Chinese medicinal recipes. Regards, Sung, Yuk-ming
