I was also curious so I asked Dr Wu, Boping.......and here is his response:

XU LU, many TCM classic books wrote this word. Like SUN, SIMIAO;

CHAO,YUANFANG; XU, ZHICAI; GONG, TINGXIAN etc.

But, GONG, TINGXIAN’s “SHOU SHI BAO YUAN†is more clear.

XU LU has 2 meanings:

1, JING LUO - Include channels, son channels, grandson channels

and

2, All of the ZANG & FU organs, All of the hair, skin, muscle,

joint, bone etc. (all of these according to KIDNEY ESSENCE).

Dr Wu

In a message dated 4/9/2010 10:15:24 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time,

parufus writes:

Thanks for surfing the ambiguity with me,

I do like the idea of this being about something besides hair... though

given the frank vedic influences in Chao Yuan Fang it seems possible that he

is on the " hair=power " side of things... the previous passage does mention

the hair, and in the parallel passage structures for the other months

there is frequently a reiteration of the connection with the tissue or

structure that is discussed...

There is an earlier passage where he talks about " filling up the ying to

facilitate communication or passage " I believe it was with the ears and or

eyes, but no explicit mention of the channels in other places. However, it

would seem that the channels would have to exist in order to be filled, no?

Perhaps it was my largely self motivated spotty education, but it really

doesn't seem like CYF gets his due. Here he is writing a compendious book

just before Sun Si Miao, which seems to have been absorbed more or less whole

into QJYF. Maybe it was the medicine of the times but it seems that CYF

was the giant that SSM was standing on the shoulders of here. In fact there

is a good chance that they overlapped chronologically and may have actually

met given CYF's ambiguous dates and SSM's inordinately long life.

The woman who's office I share is primarily a fertility person so I was

actually doing this translation for her as a christmas present (as I am cheap

and really late). The rest of the section details ways a determining

gender and influencing the character of the child, but also has a collection of

pulse changes through pregnancy. She said the pregnancy pulses that he

described seemed right on the mark to her... and people say you can't learn

anything from old books.

Thanks Henry and Rey. I think I will go with channels for the class

translation and throw in some notes for poking around in the future.

Par, do you think the line you've quoted is directly connected with

the previous line that talks about hair?

>From looking at çµç» in a couple different contexts, I am getting the

impression that it has a meaning similar to " completion " . (as in

completing a circuit...).

Thanks for bringing this up! It is a very strange passage.

Just for reference:

> I was recently translating a piece of Chao Yuan Fang's book and came

across these two characters 续缕 which seem to mean " continuous strands " . The

context is the ninth month of pregnancy, where he says

>

足少阴者,肾之脉,肾主续缕。ä¹æœˆä¹‹æ—¶ï¼Œå„¿è„‰ç»ç¼•çš†æˆï¼Œæ•\

…足少阴养之。

> Which I trasnlate roughly as:

> The leg shao yin nourishes [the fetus in this time]. The leg shao yin is

the kidney vessel; the kidney governs the continuous strand [long hair?].

In the time of the ninth month, the child's continuous strands all

complete, thus the shao yin nourishes [the fetus in this time].

>

> This whole piece was full of stuff that was not standard five phase

correspondence, but I just have no clue what this means... anyone have a shot

at it?
