It is not unattainable. I am not overly smart nor overly talented. I just have a very open (and anal) mind. If something is not working, I try something else and do not quit until I find the solution. You just have to think outside the box a bit both clinically and commercially. I just think people are in their own little comfort zones and they do not want to leave, even if it means death. And it does if we don't do something. I promise you this, it is much more comfortable on this side of the " comfort " zone, although I'm always fending off those locally that don't like what I do. > > > > There is an old saying that I like to repeat, and it applies to many of our collegues (clinically and in practice management.) I agree that quality of communication skills is essential in our field, as is the ability to 'think through' cases using Chinese medical logic. . Guest guest
Alot of the young kids come straight out of Universites with fresh Bachelor degrees. (Believe it or not.) They have no business or real world experience, and most of their " marketing " comes from getting family members in the area to come in for treatments. I, however am interested in any tips you could give. Perhaps you could start with a top ten list. Guest guest
Angela What about the $50,000 plus the schools charge for the over bloated masters? If they haven't taken clinic costs into account then they haven't done a realistic business plan. Having been privy to at least one school......it's a rip off and highly unethical. No other profession allows only pieces or modalities to be learned and licensed. For instance, an MD must learn his whole medicine in order to be a surgeon. You can't just get certified in surgery. Our medicine is a whole and it is best practiced that way. If, after graduation, one wants to specialize in one aspect, that's fine. As we have lost our identity, to a technique, we now need to look at becoming a multi-faceted professional that offers ALL that OM has to offer. That is why I am concerned with the singular technique programs that focus upon acupuncture and negate herbs, diet, etc. If we continue to take our profession apart, then we are limiting ourselves. Education in some states only recognizes acupuncture and therefore, we are technicians. We need to change that and that is one thing that a FPD will help with. We have many things that we need to work on and I think we can multi-task. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Michael W. Our medicine is a whole and it is best practiced that way. If, after graduation, one wants to specialize in one aspect, that's fine. But we need to learn the entire system. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Sincerely, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Don Snow, DAOM, MPH, L.Ac. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > traditional_ <Chinese Traditional Medicine%40> chinese_medicine > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > naturaldoc1@ <naturaldoc1%40hotmail.com> hotmail.com > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Tue, 27 Apr 2010 15:32:55 +0000 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > RE: Re: Degrees > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > R, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > It does not matter if you use it but that you are benefiting from it and so its the profession in FL, as is evident from our comment about your patients asking how to address you. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Michael W. Guest guest
My honest opinion is that students need to make their own experience, and it cannot be replaced with any school teaching. They need to find out for themselves where their place is in the profession. However, I also noticed what others have stated, students tend to be pretty unrealistic (if I am a really good acupuncturist I don't need to bother with marketing or insurance billing) what it is like in the work world and what they can expect to earn. Most students I have met hated the business courses they had to take. I also wanted to reply to the statement that the school clinic tend to keep the money the clients pay, that this seems fair to be because every treatment has a cost, and in my office that cost is about $15 per visit and the school obviously has to pay for the supervisor and their insurance on top of it. Guest guest
Now you can see from the comments below what I have had to deal with. You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. So if I admit my success, I'm arrogant. But if I don't, how will people know who to go to for help. What I have seen in the schools is people teaching practice management that, surprisingly, have never run their own SUCCESSFUL practice. This is why folks are unsuccessful. They are too " proud " to ask for help, or they think the person trying to help is " arrogant. " Sort of a catch 22 isn't it? I'm getting to where I have no desire to help anymore. Donald J. Chinese Medicine angelapfa Wed, 28 Apr 2010 12:15:07 -0700 Re: Re: Degrees My honest opinion is that students need to make their own experience, and it cannot be replaced with any school teaching. Guest guest
I know that feeling. I find it appalling that schools tend to ignore this issue of practice mgmt. You cannot simply hire anyone to teach this class, anymore, then you can hire anyone to teach any of the OM courses. If you skimp on this position, then you get what you paid fore. This brings me back to the AT article by Dr. McNamee and his solution would get rid of the poor quality instructors that have never created a successful practice. Some people like to imagine that one day their practice will magically take off if they can only wait till then. Michael W. Bowser, DC, LAc > Chinese Traditional Medicine > don83407 > Wed, 28 Apr 2010 14:43:14 -0500 > RE: Re: Degrees > > > Now you can see from the comments below what I have had to deal with. > > > > Donald J. Guest guest
They will wait a long time because a practice will not magically start producing patients. I have also observed in the schools this fact; most of the instructors don't have a successful practice, that is why they are teaching. Amazing huh? Most instructors get a name as an expert simply because they've been teaching for many years and they are good at talking, but when you look at actual results (when you try to duplicate their teaching, have you ever noticed your results don't match theirs?), they are mediocre at best. Mine are reproducable if you are a decent acupuncturist. Most acupuncturists don't have good depth and are afraid of deep needling. You have to overcome that fear by knowing what is under your needle. Another little item. Most practitioners that are teaching a lot of CEUs also don't have much of a practice. If they did, they wouldn't have enough time to be on the road. There are some exceptions, they are the one's who have trained other AOM practitioners to run their clinics while they are gone, such as Mikii Shima, KiiKo Matsumoto (whose style I love. She is a true master I'd love to emulate. But I cannot touch her. I personally find her personality not so good, but I am always willing to overlook these things to learn Just my two cents, again. Michael W. > > > > Donald J. Guest guest
I am joining this conversation late, but wanted to add my two cents. I graduated from acupuncture school in 1997.  We had one business management course which I took seriously as many of us did.  The class itself was not well-structured, in retrospect.  One of the students turned in his " final paper " (a business plan) written with a crayon.  He obviously didn't take the class seriously and I have often wondered how he has fared as a practitioner.  I was mortified to start a business because I was well aware that I was completely unpreparared. I think there were 38 grads in my class and last I had heard, only about 10 of us are practicing and of those, I am not sure how many have been " successful " .  I have been moderately successful and had a great mentor in a chiropractor I worked with the first 9 years.  I was lucky and determined not to fail.  I have also kept my practice/business very simple.  I do everything myself including reception, laundry, book-keeping, etc.  I see an average of 35 patients per week and work just 3 days per week.  I also had a career prior to acupuncture that was patient-care oriented, and that helped a lot.  I would love to teach new grads how to have a " simple " practice.   I think that not teaching more business in acupuncture school is an tragic omission.  At every opportunity, I have let my school know how I feel about this.  We were fabulously prepared for the national exam and poorly prepared for success.  At the very least, I believe they should " suggest " to students that they pick up a course or two at another college, or read certain books, etc.  I often think of my classmates who took on huge debt and have had no real way to pay it off because of their inability to handle a business. I wonder how many MDs would be successful if they also had to run a business and obtain their own patients?? I find it appalling that schools tend to ignore this issue of practice mgmt. You cannot simply hire anyone to teach this class, anymore, then you can hire anyone to teach any of the OM courses. If you skimp on this position, then you get what you paid fore. This brings me back to the AT article by Dr. McNamee and his solution would get rid of the poor quality instructors that have never created a successful practice. Some people like to imagine that one day their practice will magically take off if they can only wait till then. Michael W. > > > > Donald J. Guest guest
Hi Z'ev, I teach at the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences in Oakland with Stephen Woodley, who is also on this . The school is very " traditional " .... mainly Chinese instructors and Stephen and I really try to teach from the classics, as much as is possible in a TCM college. Also, we both believe that being able to communicate with essays is important for the students to lead themselves to the water, not just be led or fed. I hope I'm speaking accurately for Stephen, as this is a shared vision that we have. Some students put more energy into their papers than others and it shows. Some students take a lot of pride in their work and it shows. I wish that many more students with this kind of passion would join our medicine, because it inspires me to be around them. I've only been out of school a few years myself and eat and breathe the medicine, mainly because it keeps my heart pumping. Many things I write about are things that I aspire to, but have not manifested yet. I'm an infant in understanding the Chinese language, sometimes forget to do Qi gong and know even less about other forms of medicine, and these are things that I aspire to in my own personal growth and the collective evolution of our field. Guest guest
So I attended Midwest College of OM, Chicago campus. My wife started at the Racine WI campus (no legal status for acupuncture in IL back then) and finished her acupuncture studies there in 1998 and started her practice while she returned to school to finish her initial academic herbal study and finished with the master's degree. The student clinic M-F afternoons, evenings M, T, Th is FREE to the public and as such has PLENTY of patients to work on. I observed a couple hundred treatments before being allowed to needle (during which I did intake interviews once trained, pulled needles, did tui na, performed gua sha, moxibustion, cupping (still, sliding) learned and performed specific muscle releases, hooked-up and took off electrostim, turned tables, set-up clinic rooms cleaned-up when done and wrote about every step of it). Then I started needling otherpeople's protocols, then diagnosing and " creating " treatment protocols and tracking their effectiveness. And WHO paid for all this??? the students. WE PAID FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN WHILE TREATING PEOPLE WITHOUT CHARGING THEM. They did have to pay for herbs, and raw herbs were the cheapest, so many patients chose the raw route and benefitted greatly. Students paid the staff, the rent, the supplies, etc. and students benefitted from seeing ALOT of patients. WOrking doubles (tuesday afternoon and evenings) I saw 2-3 patients per hour starting at 1pm thru 9pm and often didn't get my last patient off the table til 9:45. Those interested in working efficiently had opportunity. those who liked to take their time saw 1/2 the number of patients I did. Angela, a needler in our Chesterton (IN clinic) routinely provides 125-140 acupuncture treatments in her 4-day week, 25-40 per day. Says she wishes things were busier. Told her to hang on to her hat and be careful what she wishes for, but her destiny is running a clinic so she is training to perform our style of examination and set-up treatment strategies based on our successful experience. She has already learned how to conduct successful re-evaluations and is learning another very important strategy, that of obtaining referrals from happy Clients. IT IS RARE TO FIND A GIFTED CLINICIAN WITH TIME TO TEACH. The old adage is those who can DO. Those who cannot, TEACH. School is NOT the place to learn how to be successful in private practice. Donald Snow is the place to learn this. Bob Doane is the place to learn this (he has 4 residents at a time). East Wind Acupuncture is the place to learn this. We are always interested in ambitious, caring practitioners with clear and proper intention to join our ever-expanding team while we continue to carve our niche into the semi-local landscape and continuer to grow our reputation thru outstanding results and a solid trail of changed lives. And we PAY while they learn. We will keep the good ones and let the not good ones go. Those we keep better be ready to work hard to succeed, but if they do for the right reasons and are successful there, they will be successful financially and have opportunity after opportunitiy to grow and take on more while not working more, but with growing rewards. Mark Zaranski, Ph.D, soon to be licensed acupuncturist, successful business owner, hard worker, old man, young at heart. East Wind Acupuncture, Inc.
