Guest guest
I have a very successful weightloss program going. The point is that you cannot suggest to clients that this is a magic bullet and the pounds will just melt away. I make clients analyze what they think needs to change for them to become thinner, then I ask for their commitment, very much as in standard smoking cessation. If they do not want to commit, I ask them, how important it is for them to achieve the goal, etc. I use the acupuncture to address the underlying disorder, usually St heat, or Sp def with phlegm, etc. I do not believe that behavior, e.g. eating behavior, will change unless the clients has the intention for it to change. AND, decades of research have shown over and over that giving dietary recommendations to the client does NOT work. Guest guest
I help people lose more than 20 pounds through acupuncture, herbs, diet and mainly exercising. Simply, they need to burn off more calories than they intake. If they don't exercise, they can still lose weight by becoming a rabbit and eating veggies with some protein ie. chicken salad without the ranch dressing, but they don't want to lose muscle mass, so it's important to do at least 30 minutes of cardio and weight training daily. The first 10 pounds doesn't really count, because it could just be water-weight, which can come back quickly. The key is to burn fat. Losing 1-2 pounds/ week is healthy. Weight management is an honorable practice, since so much of chronic disease is associated with obesity. Guest guest
Hello, I guess if TCM had any " magical " solution it we would know about it. Or some very lucky practiotionners would be millionaires! The other day I came by chance across leaflet advertising magnets on some auricular point for weight loss: http://www.autoterapiazerodiet.com/en/base/comesiusa.html Form my understanding it is supposed to make you feel full, so you eat less. But how many weight issues are about eating for comfort, ratehr than because one feels hungry? I remember one of my teachers saying: weight loss? Get your client to press on Large Intestine 1 point, with the opposite thumb and index finger. Then try and eat!! Artemis

Guest guest
This sounds very good Angela. Do you believe some folks have slower metabolisms? I know women do during menopause. People who are 100 lbs over weight - is there a metabolism factor, a protein or amino acid that inhibits weight loss? I always want to consider if it goes beyond a lifestyle issue or an emotional issue (although I think there is often a strong connection here). I do know with menopause and hormones changes, the energy level to even do the smallest bit of exercise may not be there. Outside remedies - acupuncture and herbs and really help to get a jump start on better life style habits. Guest guest
Hi Anne! --- Do you believe some folks have slower metabolisms? I know women do during menopause. People who are 100 lbs over weight - is there a metabolism factor, a protein or amino acid that inhibits weight loss? I always want to consider if it goes beyond a lifestyle issue or an emotional issue (although I think there is often a strong connection here). --- What do you mean by metabolism? What is Spleen Qi Def, for example? I personally have never met someone who is overweight who did not have an easily recognisable network of effects creating their weight problem. Genetic endowment will give you a bulky body with big bones, but not excess fat and water retention, plus the low energy, poor mood and bad bowels that overweight people commonly have. Why do you want to consider that it goes beyond lifetyle / emotions? Thanks, Hugo ________________________________ Hugo Ramiro http://middlemedicine.wordpress.com http://www.middlemedicine.org
Guest guest
Anne, yes... it's a natural progression in life for metabolic processes to slow down... losing yang as we age. Kids have fast pulses, elderly patients generally have slower pulses, unless they're really ill (Q: fast pulses with elderly = yang leaving the body?) All of the over-weight patients that I see are KD / SP yang deficient, but many also have stagnant heat in their LV, mixed with obvious dampness, so you can't just amp up their yang without clearing out the stagnancy as well. KD /SP yang xu will lead to " hypo-metabolic function " (adrenal-pituitary-thyroid axis), so that's why a lot of weight-loss supplements speed up the metabolism... ephedrine, caffeine etc., but these could be dangerous because they don't really supplement the SP/KD, but just turn up the gas on the burner. This is where Chinese medicine is really helpful in treating the root. How was your long walk? Guest guest
Thanks, John Walk was great. Had another yesterday. Thanks for Mothers Day wishes. My internet went down yesterday. Must be a sign to slow down. Wanted to generat some discussuion on weight loss and physical factors that could be styming the process - genetics, slower metabolism, factors indigenous to the part of the world you are from.
