I've studied some acupuncture and moxibustion in Japan. Most acupuncturists in Japan are not allowed to practice herbal medicine, and those that I've studied with who are were sort of tight-lipped on the kampo side of things, for some reason. The Shibata & Wu book on Climacteric disorders is a fine introduction to Kampo, and of course Hsu's " Commonly used Chinese Herb Formulas with Illustrations " is basically a book of Koho-style Kampo conformations (all the pictures with the abdominal areas shaded in). Since I do Meridian Therapy (Japanese five-phase acupuncture), I'm already poking around the abdomen, so to speak. So I like to incorporate the Kampo patterns. The system is not as flexible as TCM, of course, but I think it can perhaps offer some fresh insights for TCM practitioners on the nature of the formulae. ===== regards, Robert Hayden, Dipl.
