Guest guest
Dear For some reason, I cannot get into the discussion . . ..the server is rejecting my posts as not being a member. In the meantime, can you post these to the list? I also tend to use the Dong-yuan/Zhu Dan-xi/Zhang Ji approach of using a relatively limited number of prescriptions and variations to treat patients within a particular school of thought in Chinese herbal medicine. I do use some Western herbals as adjuncts, but not as parts of prescriptions. Beautifully said,. My position, always having been excited by wildcrafting herbal medicinals, and using local plants, is that we are, again, just at the beginning of understanding the qualities of local medicinals from a TCM point of view. As you pointed out, the complex reality of formulating prescriptions makes this endeavor even more complicated from the outset. I know as a former student of mine at Pacific College. His background (I hope you don't mind me saying so, Thomas) in native medicinals is excellant, his enthusiasm genuine, his research focused. I have enjoyed what I have seen of his work, and have personally benefitted from his amazing wildcrafting of herbs. What I have shared with anyone undertaking this immense project is that we are only at the beginning of utilizing native medicinals from a TCM perspective, but it must be done. The naturopathic literature, especially the Eclectics, have a well developed energetic perspective that we can research, and that Thomas has done in his writing. I propose that any study in this area be done as a presentation to the profession of individual research, to be then used in clinical trials, research and intellectual/peer review scrutiny from within the profession. This has been what is missing in the previous work, such as with Peter Holmes, who, while an exciting writer, has based his conclusions of Chinese medicine qualities of medicinals on personal speculation. To then apply speculative work to clinical treatment of patients is not only a fantasy, but professional incompetance.
