Guest guest
Hello all, First, thank you Andy, for clearing the air and welcome to the group. I hope that you will be able to participate in some of the discussions. I have two questions for anyone on the list. #1 How many (aproximately or exactly if known) medicinals are used in TCM and of those what is the break down of plant:animal:mineral used? #2 Can anyone tell me how TCM uses Bidens? There are three species used that I am aware of, they are: Bidentis Bipinnatae Herba gui zhen cao or nian shen cao Bidentis Minoris Herba xian feng cao Bidentis Tripartitae Herba lang ba cao There are around 230 species worldwide and I know of 7 species used in the West, one of which is bipinnata. This is a very common and weedy plant that I have limited experience with using the Western herbal information I have on it. On that note a third question, a two parter: What is that best Materia Medica in the Chinese language and is there a source to buy it from here in the US? Thanks in advance, Chinese Herbology and Acupuncture " Serve others and cultivate yourself simultaneously " Lao Tzu
Guest guest
Craig and Philip, I didn't mean to sound so ignorant but instead was trying elicit the opinions on the question. That being said, I agree with Craig that anything purchased here would probably cost many times more than I would pay for it in China. However, I don't have any plans to go in the near future, anyone going want to take a couple hundred of my dollars and bring me back some book? Also Craig mentioned that someone needs to write another bencao in English (I assume one of the reasons for this is translation and the use of " better " terminology). I would love to start this work but need those books to move forward. Perhaps someone out there would like to team up with me on this project? Guest guest
Thomas, If that can help.. I will recommend you 2 classical " Bencao " : 1. <Bencao beiyao> (Essential Herbal Foundation) 1694 by Wang Ang relies on <Bencao Gangmu> and <Shen Nong Bencao Jingshu>. 470 yao divided in 8 categories. The basics for Chinese. numerous editions; for example, Tianjin kexuejishu chubanshe 1993 ISBN 7-5308-1184-3/R.331 2. <Benjing Shuzheng> (Insights on Syndromes from the (Shen Nong) Herbal Foundation Canon) 12 juan 1832 by Zoushu (173 yao)* combines theories from <Shen Nong Bencao jing> + analysis from <Shanghan lun> and <Jingui Yaolue> * Common editions include <Bencao Xushu> (Continuation of the Insights..) by Zou Shu 6 juan with 142 yao Shanghai kexuejishu chubanshe 1991 ISBN 7-5323-2534-2/R. 769 3. and one modern edition (impressive): <ZHONGHUA BENCAO> under the direction of Hu Ximing & Zhang Wenkang first edition in 2 volumes 1998 Shanghai kexuejishu chubanshe ISBN 7-5323-4434-7/R. 1173 Good substitute to the well known <Zhongyao dacidian> (Dictionary of Chinese Herbs) Having said this, I totally agree with Craig's comments (..any such thing as the " best " Materia Medica in Chinese) Philip Riviere.
