Guest guest
Thomas- Cute question. You know, when I was in school, it crossed my mind to go through Bensky and the other materia medica we used and do just this in case I ever needed this information. Now I wish I had. Guest guest
Of the aprox. 5000 medicinals in the TCM materia medica does anyone know what the how many of these are animal and mineral? To and all members, 1. <Zhongyao dacidian> (Dictionary of Chinese Herbs) lists 5767 different " herbs " . The introduction lists: * 4773 from vegetal kingdom * 740 from animal kingdom * 82 from mineral kingdom * 172 from processed items (like Shenqu..) In the same book but using the Latin index, I have personnally counted: * 438 from animal kingdom * 58 from mineral kingdom Q.E.D. * ..5271 from vegetal kingdom! (??) 2. the Reference < Zhongguo Bencao Tulu> (Pictorial records of the Chinese Materia Medica) in 10 volumes (but 2 more volumes have been recently published) itemizes 5000 different yao. Using the general index, I have counted 375 yao from animal kingdom and 96 from mineral kingdom (including 25 from processed minerals)..
