Guest guest
Check out Santa Cruz CA. area. Michael Tierra and Christopher Hobbs among the more famous that have medicinal gardens in this area. However from I understand even in different parts of China the same plant will be of different value. I don't know if its species related or just soil/climate but many herbs are region specified. Additionally I think its East-West Herbs around Oakland, CA that sells v that sells only high quality herbs and makes sure that the name is correct. It seems that herbs (and other things) from overseas are often miss-named intentionally to get around customs, FDA and the like.. Something like calling a Toyota a Honda, and a truck a car to get by quotas. Guest guest
Dear Peter, This is one issue I have thought about a lot. I am afraid that necessity (and economics) is the mother of invention. There ARE many Chinese medicinals growing in North America. . . .and it would help if textbooks and teachers would use common names (like ma bo/puffball) as well as Latin. Steven Foster in the past tried growing a few Chinese herbs, but they were very expensive. Also, the Chinese are very protective of their seed stocks of medicinals, as they are worth billions in trade, as well as the technology to prepare many of the medicinals. Finally, paying Americans to grow, pick and harvest medicinals, not to say wildcraft them, would greatly increase the price. This is definately a long-term project. All this being said, I doubt that China will 'cut off' the herb supply, or America do the same. . . .it is too profitable, and the herb trade goes back many years to the establishment of Chinese communities in the West. In answer to B: I think so. . .. .I found dozens of Chinese medicinals in New Mexico and Colorado, and 86 medicinals at the San Diego Zoo. Steven Foster has two books out on Chinese medicinals in the southeastern states. C: China has as great a variety of climates as the U.S.. . . .so different medicinals will mimic different regions. For example, huang lian/coptis grows in the Northern Rockies. Wu wei zi/schizandra and Ge gen/pueraria grow in the deep south. So, it makes sense to learn herbal medicinals from different regions in America. . . .we might need this knowledge some day. >Peter J Eschwey <Cloudgate > >Given that an unfriendly confrontation between the US and China is a >possibility, how can we secure a satisfying Chinese herbal pharmacy >outside of China...... is this possible? > >So comes the following questions: > >A.
