Guest guest
I am not sure if am I am guessing or remembering something here, but this formula is a variation of er chen tang, which was used frequently by zhu dan xi to remove turbidity caused by disruption of the qi mechanism. In this type of case, it might be that spleen xu has caused both phlegm and damp accumulation, which is then wafted upwards by the liver wind. But this is abnormal as the normal liver ascent should not cause wind. So what aggravates the liver. Well, the formula only addresses one root pattern, which is spleen qi xu with bai zhu and fu ling. Otherwise, it addresses wind and phlegm, two excess branches. Li dong yuan said that spleen xu could lead to ministerial fire counterflow. Since ministerial fire is mingmen, the lifegate, it also overlaps with kidney yang. When the ministerial fire counterflows due to qi weakness in the middle jiao, the yang of all organs can be agitated. Perhaps this is the source of the liver wind.
