Peter,

I don't know about the visual identification cues (i.e. concentric circles or

not), but Da Xue teng is suppposed to be an alternative Chinese name for

Sargentodoxae/Hong Teng, which is similar to Ji Xue Teng, but instead of the

sweet/warm, blood nourishing, blood activating, channel invigorating effects

of Milletia, Sargentodoxae is bitter-neutral, pathogenic heat & toxic evils

clearing, and blood activating & stasis removing, and according to Jiang Fu

Jiang MD (China) of China International Med. U., it's the King Herb for PID

(and usually seems to work well for this in perscriptions).

Hope that helps a little, perhaps other lister's have more data...

All the best,

Bruce

Hi everyone,

Can anyone describe the visual difference between:

1) Ji Xue Teng

2) Hong Teng

3) Da Xue Teng ?

my understanding is that Ji Xue Teng is concentric circles, but I have

no idea about the difference between Da Xue Teng and Hong Teng! Also:

how are their functions different?

Any answers would be deeply appreciated.

Peter,

You can consult the reference book <A coloured Atlas of the Chinese Materia

Medica specified in Pharmacopoeia of PRC (1995)> (cf. Redwings'

catalogue)for a visual difference between:

1. picture # 033 Daxueteng ( " Sargent Glory vine stem " )

2. picture # 248 Jixueteng ( " Suberect Spatholobus stem " )

From other Chinese (crossed)references, Hongteng = Daxueteng.

Please, note that Hongteng/ Daxueteng is classified as a " qingre jiedu " herb

(clearing heat and resolving toxin) and

Jixueteng as a " buxue huoxue " herb (supplementing and quickening the blood).
