Dear Spammees,

I am pretty sure the spam you received is not related to this list.

Your complete email address is not even available to other members of

the group. If you check the members list, you will notice you can

only

see a partial address. As moderator, I can download all your

addresses, but I was incorrect in thinking that others could also do

this (try if don't believe me). I can definitely assure you that

neither myself nor makes this information available to anyone.

Some of you may be having your personal information " taken " by

websites

that send you " cookies " . This can occur when your browser is enabled

to " accept cookies " , which is standard configuration. This basically

gives permission for the website to " interact " with certain files on

your browser. This is supposedly the source of most spam attacks,

based on the geek magazines I read. Most users are getting too savvy

to just hand out their email address anymore.

You can disable cookies, unless you are on AOL, but you may also be

blocked from certainy commercial sites if you do this. You can do

this

in advanced preferences. It is against the law for a spammer to

ignore

a removal request, but I often get messages after making such

requests

myself. However, they eventually stop.

Another way to protect your email address is to make sure it is not

included on any of your friends or colleagues open mailing lists.

You

have probably received messages that include the addresses of dozens

of

other recipients. This is a great way for spammers to snag huge

numbers of addresses of people with similar interests. Ask to be

removed from such lists and do not use them yourselves.

In your email program, you can usually create a list and give it a

single name like " my friends " . If you send this list as TO:, then

all

the names will be exposed. However, if you send this list as Bcc:,

then all the names will be blind and the address will read:

recipients

undisclosed.

Hope this helps.
