Guest guest
Hello everyone, Speaking of the longterm use of certain herbs, I have a 40 y.o. patient who donated a kidney to her husband 6 months ago. Outwardly, she is in pretty good shape, considering, but her left chi pulse is practically not there and her tongue is quite pale, puffy and tender. My dx for her is K yin/yang xu, with damp accumulation in the lower jiao, Sp qi xu and a retained pathogen in the Lungs. So I have prescribed her a variation of jin gui shen qi wan/Kidney Qi pill in granulated extract form. I imagine that this will be her basic formula for a long time. Now, a few years ago at a seminar with Dr. Yitian Ni, Dr. Ni warned against using liu wei di huang wan for prolonged periods, over 6 months, as a study in China showed that prolonged use can lead to nephropathy. Has anybody ever heard of this? What kind of regimes do people put their patients on when they know that they will have to be taking supplementing herbs for a long time? Do you occasionally replace herbs- say replace the shu di with a han lian cao and nu zhen zi combo for a while? Do you have the patient take herbs 3 weeks on and 1 week off during the month? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks. Kristin Wisgirda, MTOM, Lic.Ac.
Guest guest
Would Gui Liu Er Xian Jiao work better ? (Lu Jiao, Gui Ban, Gou Qi Zi, Ren Shen)(Benskey p. 280). This would change the strategy a bit from draining/tonifying to tonifying and maybe sub Dang Shen for Ren Shen if you need to focus more on Spleen and Lung Qi. I also believed that 6 days of herbs one day rest for 3 weeks then a few days of rest and repeat AND always to monitor and adjust weekly as the body responds/fails to respond as thought. However, I am not sure about "retained pathogen in the Lungs" and the strategy should address that as primary. Also I have assumed - among other things - that she has been on a variation of jin gui shen qi wan for some time. Thank you for listening, Ed Kasper L.Ac., Santa Cruz, California kwisgirda [kwisgirda]Tuesday, June 13, 2000 9:43 AM Subject: longterm use of jin gui shen qi wan Hello everyone, Speaking of the longterm use of certain herbs, I have a 40 y.o. patient who donated a kidney to her husband 6 months ago.
