Japanese MD's must prescribe one of the 240+ Kampo formulas approved for

reimbursement by Japan's national health insurance program. Although I have not

confirmed this, I believe I have read that a licensed pharmacist's presecription

may also

be reimbursed. Regardless, Kampo formulas are routinely available OTC, and

there are

companies that have forgone health insurance reimbursement by refusing the

formula

standardization imposed by GMP, which they hold as qualitatively insufficient.

These

companies serve a population of traditional practitioners, both acupuncturists

and

herbalists, who prescribe on a cash basis.
