Guest guest
Dear Group, I've been seeing these house bill posts flying around during the last few days and thought about the implications of our profession being accepted into the medicare club. I checked around with many of my MD friends and with some of the senior members of our profession here in Illinois. Everything I've heard seems to suggest that Medicare could be a horrible thing for us to be part of. Not only would it make it potentially more desirable for chiros and MDs to do acupuncuture (and they would already have the mechanisms in place to bill), but it would introduce a very rigid control over our billing and what we could do. I think too many of us are seduced by the prospect of being accepted by the mainstream health system and will do whatever it takes to fit into that world. We should think carefully before making any potentially damaging and permanent mistakes. Mark Reese

Guest guest
Hi Karen, It's Medicare bill HR 1890 and the number to call is 202-224-3121 (the capitol switchboard) Ask them for your Congressional Representative's office (if you don't have a phone book which lists them.) Sample Dialogue--- " Hello, my name is _____. I live in (city), in Congressman Smith's district. I would like to ask the Congressman to support HR1890, which may be coming up for a vote this week. " They may ask for your address. Pass it on. Guest guest
Are you suggesting that chiros and MDs want to pull out of Medicare, or that they are going to stop billing Medicare because they are not in control ??? I do not understand your logic. Guest guest
Ed, I'm not entirely sure where you pulled the idea that I was suggesting that MD's were going to stop billing Medicare because they aren't in control. However every doc I have contact with really dislikes insurance of all sorts, in particular Medicare. Insurance introduces controls into their practices, alters their cash flow substantially, and requires them to hire employees simply to do the extra work required. They live with insurance because, having opened Pandora's box, there is really nothing else they can do. Even their attempt (MD's) to unionize last year was largely against the insurance industry. In addition, several of the MD's I know who have taken the UCLA acupuncture correspondence course, don't practice because they can't get reimbursement on what they do. Their patients, accustomed to using insurance to see their doctor, won't pay out of pocket. Instead, these docs refer to me. My practice, being cash from the get go, doesn't upset the patients. If Medicare begins to pick up the cost, more of these MD's may begin to practice the paltry acupuncture that they know. This wouldn't be good for us in the long run. I hope I've clarified. Guest guest
I can see your conclusion but your rationale is faulty. Yes, there is a cost of doing business - which also serves to keep competition down or non-existent. Without Insurance Companies / Pharmaceuticals /Gov't / Regulations (also designed to limit competition) the MD's would be out of business. Actually Insurance Companies / Pharmaceuticals /Gov't / Regulations / MD's are one in the same... And they all cry woe is me. In my opinion competition is not bad - and may actually be healthy for the public. However it should be on a honest level paying field. I do not mean this as an attack on individual MD's - insurance agents - or our friendly politicians who more often express their true good heart - But the system is in place, is in control and individuals have little to say about it. Similar to our plight of our schools - Publish or Perish (who cares about teaching). Our Health System - Be a part of it and Profit or ... Guest guest
Except MD's are going out of business because they cannot cover expenses. Medicare fee schedule will become official for other insurance as well. You will be working for $20 per visit Alon - " HappyHerbalist.com " <Health Friday, June 30, 2000 10:00 AM RE: House bill > I can see your conclusion but your rationale is faulty. > > Yes, there is a cost of doing business - which also serves to keep > competition down or non-existent. > > Without Insurance Companies / Pharmaceuticals /Gov't / Regulations (also > designed to limit competition) the MD's would be out of business. > > Actually Insurance Companies / Pharmaceuticals /Gov't / Regulations / MD's > are one in the same...
