Guest guest
If anyone follows third party politics, the Reform Party which will actually have lots of money ($25,000,000) to spend this fall, has an interesting nomination challenge of some relevance to our profession. Most people might think of the Reform Party as anti-China in some respects. They have been strong opponents of normal trade relations, for example. Pat Buchanan, the former Nixon speechwriter and CNN Pundit is the most well known candidate. Many people do not even know he is being opposed by a fellow named John Hagelin of the Natural Law Party. Don't let the name scare you; if you read the Natural Law materials, the natural law Hagelin refers to sounds a lot like the Tao or maybe the self-organizing forces described in chaos theory and systems biology. Let me digress to say that I am NOT endorsing Hagelin. I also do not believe he has any chance of winning the actual election. However, if he is elected Reform Party candidate, some of his positions will get a national audience. Historically, third parties usually have their greatest influence in framing debate at the center. So what is interesting about Hagelin? Well, its no coincidence that his natural law sounds like the Tao. He is a quantum physicist by training who has also been a long advocate of meditation and herbal medicine. Not only does Hagelin see the importance of making natural medicine the centerpiece of any healthcare reform, but he actually understands the difference between merely allopathic styles of herbology and truly holistic medicine. This is because he is very well versed in Ayurveda and yoga. Anyway, if you'd like to see the part of your tax dollars that go to the Reform Party be used to promote holistic preventive herbal medicine, renewable energy sources, progressive education programs that include learning internal mental disciplines and proper fitness, etc. You can register to vote in the Reform primary today. Today is the last day! Let's force George and Al and even Ralph to talk about issues that matter to us. Register at: http://www.reasontovote.com/request.html Personally, I rather not see a dime go to Pat Buchanan this summer. I don't want my money spent on veiled neo-nazi ravings. But you should also check out the dope on Hagelin himself before actually voting at http://www.reasontovote.com/hagelin.html Not all of his positions would be acceptable to all. And I'm sure there's some voters out there who make or break a candidate on a single issue of extreme importance. Once again, this is not an endorsement. Admittedly, I actually can't make up mind about whether to vote third party at all until I see late fall polling. Any registered voter can vote in the Reform Party Presidential Primary.
