Guest guest
Hello again everybody! (No news on the pork pancreas story so far) I have a quest, maybe not of interest for the majority on this list but maybe someone around could guide me to a sollution. Theme: Multi language systems on the computer, and a suitable database system for chinese and western languages for chinese medicine. I work , when I can, on my computer with a database for chinese medicine. The problem is how to get a platform that enables both chinese characters (I only demand simplified so far, not to make it extreme) and western languages at the same time, for search and edit. Until now I have experimentated with macintosh and the programe Filemaker 4.0. But, here there are problems (I dont have the taiwanese version of Filemaker and it is out of production so haven't tried that, only english vers.), because (western) Filemaker cant deal with " 2 byte languages " - the system used for chinese (and many other non western languages). This does that you can write chinese characters n Filemaker, but you cant effectively edit in the chinese texts. Some people live with that and work with other programs where they prepeare the text, but I need it more efficient, lots of chinese etc. Im in acute need of information and placed in bad enviroment for info on these matters - (Denmark). I also understand that world script for western FM's are not the tool with the sollution. And that (probably - or as far as I know) no one have has made a plug in for FIlemaker to handle it. (its the same problem for windows versions of filemaker i think). How to make head and tail of this with my little witts for this stuff, (and scarce fundings) - I dont know, so if anyone can give me accurate news or sollutions on e.g. plug ins chinese versions of FM or other relevant news or tricks OR Windows systems that work good And Database Systems that are suitable for exactly this multi language purpose - I am about to change over now, and guidance is not bad especially when it comes to these matters(!) - please please hand it over. I know that some of the guru's around the world work with databases for chinese medicine, so one way to help me could be to give me a ticket to get into touch with one of those guys (I would be gratefull if possible). e.g. Wiseman or Steven Clavey or alike, or someone who must have good experience in these matters. hopeful and giving thanks before hand All the best - sebastian

It uses English, pinyin and Chinese characters. I use a Macintosh with Filemaker 4.0, and have not problems getting chinese characters into my database. Filemaker is 2 byte compatible (something I CAN'T say for Microsoft products!), however you need to install the Chinese language kit to get the characters to appear in Filemaker. At least if you are using System 8.6 or earlier. If you are using System 9, it comes with the language kit, you just need to install it. Also there is a great program called Wenlin, which helps you to learn Chinese and can be used as a database of sorts. However, if you really want a true database. Filemaker is the program. It works splendidly, and does a good job with characters. So long as you have the Chinese language kit installed. Hope that helps zai jian Michael ------ Michael Max, Licensed Acupuncturist & Certified Herbalist michaelmax http://www.home.earthlink.net/~michaelmax
