its all the rage here in NZ and Aust at the moment .Someone wrote an article

that it contained SYNEPHRINE ..which helps you lose fat...esp if combined

with 7 cups coffee(black) and asprin and grapefruit juice.

I looked in Benski and there is no mention of synephrine in zhi shi ...does

anyone have any other sources to check this?

In The Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica, it mentions that Zhi Shi contains

the alkaloid Synephrine in the amounts of .024-0.18%...that's very minute!

Can't imagine the amount one would have to take to get any effects from it!

I'm curious myself about the synephrine content of Zhi shi, however I do

know that some studies have found a particular chemical in grapefruit that

keeps caffeine in your system longer and that any one who drinks 7 cups of

black coffee a day is going to experience some boosted

metabolism(thermogenesis) causing some fat loss. I'll keep looking on the

zhi shi. Best in health, Shelly

That's the point; synephrine only has potentially dangerous druglike

effects when strongly concentrated, not as it is typically used in

TCM. This is a good example of where biochemical details can lend

clarityto a safety issue.

This has nothing to do with prescribing, which I

agree should be done on a bian zheng basis unless you are trained

otherwise.

But it has everything to do with defending our traditional usages of

herbs in amodern context.

In The Illustrated Chinese Materia Medica it notes that zhi shi contins the

alkaloid synephrine of .024-.18%...not much...so probably the weight loss is

coming from the massive caffeine/grapefruit boost!

Subhuti Dharmananda at the Institute for Traditional Medicine has published

a report on synephrine and zhi shi. Apparently there had been some

substantial negative press somewhere in the world (Europe, I believe) about

the drug-herb. People may have died and blamed the herb use. The ITM paper

essentially criticised the media hype and stated that the herb was unlikely

to be useful for weight loss or beneficial.

Check out the ITM website for more info.
