Guest guest
Dear Howard, Seirin needles also come in all metal, if you feel that conducts Qi better. I use Seirin needles because they are a higher quality product -- it is not just the silicone coating, the tip itself is more precise and contains less imperfections. It is the Japanese regard for superior workmanship in precision instruments that appeals to me. As for alcohol-swabbing, I know old school practitioners who don't use it, and have no problems with infections. But, it is CNT-required, and therefore, must be done. Period. It also gives your patients reassurance that you are clinically professional and up to date. For that alone, it is necessary. It really doesn't matter to know which, if any, orgnaisms are actually killed by alcohol. Good luck with your classes. Where are you studying? Julie Chambers, L.Ac. Guest guest
Hi all, I just began my first needling techniques class and I have several questions: 1) My instructor(whom I admire and respect very much) claimed that prepping points with alcohol does nothing but remove dirt and is basically useless.I strongly disagree with this point of view and while I understand that alcohol does not kill viruses, I was sure that it destroys bacteria and removes dirt. What are your thoughts? (clean needle technique notwithstanding) 2) I have had mixed answers regarding the " right " needle to use - Seirins or Chinese needles. I heard about the silicon coating on Seirins and called the company( It is less than a drop and only on the tip of the needle). But Chinese needles have a metal handle and this supposedly conducts Qi better. Comments? Thanks for the help Howard
Guest guest
Hi Howard, I agree that alcohol is basically useless other than to clean the area of grime and a small amount of bacteria I suppose. Mechanical action. To do more than that requires a much longer time than a fast swipe (not sure how long) . I've actually wondered about using hydrogen peroxide instead, as it is less burning to the eyes and skin and less drying-- and not as cold on the belly! Don't really think it would be any more sanitizing. Re needles... I use both seirins and Japanese-style metal handled needles such as Sharps and just recently have tried Acumaster. I tried an experiment while showing a patient the various kinds of needles -- held each needle by the shaft and flicked the handle while holding it. Wow! an incredible difference in resonance between needles! Seirins, with the plastic handle, went thunk thunk. felt Also feels like that in the body. Would thus not resonate very deeply in the body. The handle is very light weight. The Sharps, on the other hand have a wonderful springiness and a much heavier handle and create a very deep low-pitched resonance. I used different brands of needles in the treatment and asked my patient if they felt different -- using a seirin #3 on SP 6 left and a Sharps #3 on SP 6 right, for example. He could really feel the difference, too. The Sharp needle felt like the energy penetrated more deeply. Carbo needles, as I recall, had a very high pitched feeling and a shallower penetration. This is, of course, not at all scientific but it was very interesting and I started wondering if others thought about this and the different effect different brands of needles might have. I still like using the Sharps needles and they are inexpensive at $4 a box, compared to the seirins. I do use the tiny #1 seirins for needle-sensitive people and always use the 1/2 inch red seirins for face points. Though I had a Toyo-Hari style treatment yesterday, and the practitioner inserted no needles at all -- just lightly touched the skin and brushed the skin back and forth -- and it felt wonderful. Good luck with it all and enjoy your studies! Catherine - hp Tuesday, July 11, 2000 7:22 PM Several questions for the group.... Guest guest
There was a journal in one of the 'prominent' medical journals that concluded that alcohol swabbing was basically useless (even for hypodermic needle insertion),... They just continue to use this method, before insertion, to make the patient feel better... can't remember the source, but I'm sure you could do a medline search.. - hp [hnp] Tuesday, July 11, 2000 7:23 PM Several questions for the group....
