Bear Farming

Does anybody have any insight into this organization that is promoting

the saving of bears who's GB bile is milked from them to be used in

Chinese medicinal applications.

Here's the web site:

http://www.animalsasia.org/

Some pertainent copy from the site:

The bile liquid within bear gall bladders is classed as a " bitter, cold "

medicine with the function of expelling heat in the body. It is used to

treat heat-related illnesses such as high temperatures, liver

complaints, and sore eyes.

Only a small percentage of the medicines produced are accepted as

efficacious by eminent traditional Chinese medical practitioners, who

stress that all bear bile products can be replaced by herbs or synthetic

alternatives which, they say, are cheaper, more readily available and

just as effective.

Tragically, because of the market saturation of bear bile, many farmers

have now turned to producing non-essential products, such as throat

lozenges, shampoo, wine and tea, in order to utilize the surplus. The

products have no benefit to health, but allow the farmer to continue

making a profit using the symbol of a majestic species and the trusting

minds of naive consumers.

What a tragic waste of this noble species' bile juice and an insult to

the very premise of Traditional Oriental Medicine, which embraces a

culture of being in harmony with nature.
