From Medscape.

Analysis and review of the literature sponsored by The Council for

Responsible Nutrition has shown that ma huang is safe and effective for

weight loss. 19 clinical trials were reviewed, " ...including data from

a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled Harvard and Columbia

University study which was presented this fall at a meeting of the

American Association for the Study of Obesity. " " We observed a

transient increase in blood pressure associated with the initiation of

ephedra and caffeine therapy, and an increase in heart rate of about 4

beats/minute, which was sustained throughout the study. But we did not

observe any increases in cardiac irritability by any measure. Weight

loss was statistically significant among those taking the supplement. "

From the Ephedra research article:

" This is really a win-win situation for both consumers and industry, "

said John Cordaro, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible

Nutrition, at a press conference. " Consumers can feel confident that if

they use ephedra according to labeling, they have an effective tool to

aid their weight loss efforts. On behalf of industry we have submitted

this document to the FDA and we hope the agency will be guided by the

science in making their regulatory decisions. "

Actually, its a win-win-win because those who take ephedra for weight

loss, will give rise to a whole new herbal industry for internal deficiencies.

Al, trying to give this a positive spin...
