Guest guest
If a nonstandard pattern is introduced into TCM dx, then it is only clinically relevant to me if the identification of said pattern results in a treatment principle and strategy that is not covered by an existing pattern. To name a pattern and merely treat it the same as the pattern of another name seems redundant and superfluous to me. It would be like deciding that one pattern of chronic loose stool should be called large intestine qi vacuity instead of spleen qi vacuity, but then using bu zhong yi qi tang in either case. this may be more relevant to acupuncture where the identification of a channel plays a greater role than in herbology. So while si jun zi tang is used for both spleen qi xu and liver qi xu, different points might be selected (assuming one believes acupuncture's effect on supplementation is analogous to herbs - I do not and direct interested parties to Steven Clavey's recent JCM article on the subject.). -- Chinese Herbal Medicine
