<<Contaminated Chinese herbs recalled

January 4, 2001

Web posted at: 4:05 PM EST (2105 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A chemical linked to cases of

kidney failure in Europe has been found in Chinese

herbs distributed in the United States, the government

said.

Two California companies are recalling eight brands of

Chinese herbs after federal testing found some bottles

contaminated with aristolochic acid.

After reports of kidney failure from Britain and

Belgium, the FDA last summer stopped imports of the

herb family Aristolochia. While no U.S. injuries have

been reported, the FDA discovered the ingredient in

some Chinese herbal mixes already in U.S. stores,

resulting in several recalls.

The products were sold in bottles with either the

Taiwanese logo Sheng Chang imprinted on the bottom or

with the U.S. imprint Trans Container Corporation.

Both companies' products were sold throughout the

country, including by acupuncturists, chiropractors

and other health workers.

Is there any movement to standardize and link Chinese common names to botannical

names? We really need to do this in order to avoid situations like this in the

future.
