Guest guest
Z'ev, >I'd like to hear Ken Rose's point of view on this, since he has written a book about qi.< When I taught a seminar at the Chengdu University of TCM a few years ago, I used to say to the students, who were all masters and doctorate candidates, that it would take a whole book to translate the word qi. One day they got fed up with hearing this and challenged me to do so. Yu Huan and I spent several years looking at issues like the one that's been raised here how. Those who are interested can find the results of this investigation at: http://www.paradigm-pubs.com/html/BreHisQi.html I think it will still be a few months before the book is released. Meanwhile I'm certainly happy to talk about it at whatever length others wish to. I'll share a curious anecdote on the subject. I recently wrote a long essay about qi. It was 10,000 words or so. Just out of curiosity, I used the auto-summarize function in MS WORD and got my essay reduced down to just eight words. Here is what the computure figured out I was trying to say: " Qi. Qi is not qi. Yin is yang. " Ken
