Guest guest
Why do nightsweats in yin xu occur at night? Some sources say that because nighttime is yintime, a lack of yin essences in menopause leads to excess yang heat opening the pores being most apparent at night. However one of my students pointed out that since daytime is yangtime, yin should be even more vacuous during the day, thus sweating and hot flashes would make more sense to occur during the day by that logic. Following that logic, one would also expect spontaneous sweating to be more evident during the night when yin takes ascendancy over yang, thus yang loses its securing function and yin leaks out. Any thoughts? -- Chinese Herbal Medicine

Unsure what the above is saying, but... Why are the open pores most apparent at night, is the question? It seems that more yang in the day would cause more opening (in the day) (yin constricts)... my idea--> at night the yang retreats inward and yin is then in charge of the surface.. yin is too weak to hold the pores closed (normally a yang fx in day) so fluids escape.. also more heat is usually created during this time due to the relatively excess yang that has retreated inward. (it is not checked by a substantial enough amount of yin), thus night sweats w/ some heat. Just found from diagnostics of traditional Chinese medicine: defensive qi normally enters the interior and moves in yin phase with the nutrient yin when sleeping. If the yin is deficient, the defensive qi can not enter the yin phase and wanders, the nutrient yin follows the defensive qi and exits the body, producing sweat. Once awake the defensive qi goes back to the exterior part of the body and controls the surface. (similar) However one of my students pointed out that since daytime is yangtime, yin should be even more vacuous during the day, thus sweating and hot flashes would make more sense to occur during the day by that logic. My idea --> Not really, because yang is on the surface and yin still has enough strength to hold down the fort... yang acts like a shell. Yin is cool and in the interior (for the time being)... Following that logic, one would also expect spontaneous sweating to be My understanding was spontaneous sweating only occurs in the daytime... and night sweating can be found with spontaneous sweating due to yin xu accompanied by qi xu. If not then, what is the difference between spont. sweats at night and night sweats? more evident during the night when yin takes ascendancy over yang, thus yang loses its securing function and yin leaks out. does yang lose its securing fx or is it passed to the yin to do its job? Sweat Theory/Ideas: since yin xu is not the only cause for night sweats there would be various etiologies for the other causes, for example heart blood deficiency... -
