Hi everybody,

Are there any herbs that contain gluten besides xiao mai and fu xiao mai? I have a gluten interolerant patient coming in this week but I haven't worked with such patients before.

Thanks,

Kristin

Hey Kristin,

I'm not sure about herbs, but there's a great resource, the Celiac Disease

organization. Many large cities have a Celiac Disease support group and the

organization has a great website that lists foods to avoid, tasty

substitutes, and some research. It is www.celiacdisease.com.

For example, did you know that most ginger ale has gluten in it? Apparently

wheat is used to give it that nice golden glow. If a food says natural

flavor or natural coloring, the celiac disease people say beware.

Even if you have patients with only a very mild wheat sensitivity that

results in typical spleen qi xu/accumulation of dampness gas, bloating,

abdominal distention, constipation, check out this website.

I've been finding quite a few people here in Michigan with curious symptoms

that seem to respond to acupuncture, but only briefly, e.g., chronic

sinusitis, chronic digestive weakness, and some cases of migraines. After

looking at some similar pattern differentiations and having problems with

long-term effects, I try wheat clearing for two weeks. It doesn't always

work, but I've had a few interesting successes (plus, most of the people

who've done the clearing also seem to lose weight). Anyway, this website

gives people some hope that they can eat enjoyable meals that don't

necessarily have wheat.

Jeff
