Guest guest
Hello all, I am wondering which herbs can be used instead of Ge Jie / Gecko for the use in Asthma or other respiratory problems. This double function of tonifying Kidney- and Lung-Yang seems to be something only animals have. The only exception I see is Hu Tao Ren / S. Juglandis. Similar problem with Zi He Che / Placenta hominis. any ideas? sincerely, Patrick
Guest guest
Patrick, I've never used gecko. But for a combined lung and kidney tonic, dong chong xia cao/Cordyceps could be considered. There is a difference between the chemical composition and species of cordyceps products on the market since much of what is available in quantity are fermentation products. A substantial portion of the research over the past 20-30 years has been done on a species of cordyceps sinensis called hepiali paleomyces. Polysaccharride content may be the key indicator of quality regardless of species. Cordyceptic acid is often listed as a marker compound but in fact this is actually just mannitol. I'm not suggesting that mannitol content is irrelevant to bioactivity but it has not been conclusively related. Chong cao (cordyceps militaris) is the most common replacement for cordyceps sinensis. Differentiating the TCM use of chong cao from dong chong xia cao has been theorized, but not conclusively. I haven't double checked my Latin spelling as I am on the road, so you may want to look it up. Guest guest
I've used dong chong xia cao/cordyceps as a substitute for gecko. Tastes pretty good, available in a laboratory-grown version, but kind of expensive. If you buy 100 grams, it goes for about 35-50 cents a gram. Great for tonifying kidney and lung yang. (at least in the 2 places I get it from) But still you are right somehow. Feels strange to me to give someone someone elses placenta. For the case of the gecko I don't know whether it gets endangered through the use in medicine, or do they have farms for it? So you used it and had good results? I am curious about that stuff! Guest guest
Walnuts, 30 g vs. 12 for decocted gecko or for 3-5 g gecko powder. Placenta is somewhat more complex and you may need to rework the formula altogether.
